Astronomy Picture of the Day -- Venus and Jupiter are Close
NASA ^ | July 02, 2015 | (see photo credit)

Explanation: On June 30, Venus and Jupiter were close in western skies at dusk. Near the culmination of this year's gorgeous conjunction, the two bright evening planets are captured in the same telescopic field of view in this image taken after sunset from Bejing, China. As the two bright planets set together in the west, a nearly Full Moon rose above the horizon to the south and east. Imaged that night with the same telescope and camera, the rising Moon from the opposite part of the sky is compared with the planetary conjunction for scale in the digitally composited image. The full lunar disk covers an angle of about 1/2 degree on the sky. Visible as well in binoculars and small telescopes are Venus' crescent and Jupiter's four Galilean moons. Of course, Venus and Jupiter are still close.

Jupiter’s big four moons are visible too.

They could run into each other! NASA had better send some Moslems up to the ISS and stop this tragedy from unfolding!

I had a great view last night. They were side by side and really bright, even viewed from the center of a major city with bright lights. But I missed the “Star of Bethlehem” formation Tuesday night due to heavy cloud cover and thunderstorms. I wish I could have seen that.

It was overcast here Tuesday evening but I was able to see them through breaks in the clouds Wednesday night.

They are too close for comfort. They were making noises--it sounded just like firecrackers going off in the distance.

Cooooool...

I’ll never forget my freshman year in college, when I took an introductory Astronomy class. Our prof took us up to the observatory the first week and let us all look through the telescope to get a glimpse of Saturn. I really was left speechless by it.

Space is so danged neat!

It is. I remember looking through the cheapie reflector scope (Edmund Scientific) at Jupiter the first time, and how the Galilean moons were laid out like pearls.

Yes, space is mind boggling! There are Billions of Suns in our own milky way galaxy and there are Billions of galaxies in the universe we can reach with technology.

Which means there are Hundreds of Billions of earth like planets in space. And if only 1% evolved life, there are many Billions of planets with life.

The only problem is they are millions of light years away from us. Chances of contacting any of them are extremely minute.
