Vanity - Need recommendations for a good coffee maker

Posted on 07/04/2015 11:23:42 AM PDT by Perdogg

I just bought a place and I am not a huge fan of coffee, I use diet Mountain Dew to get me started in morning. I realize that if I am going to entertain a lady (or two) at my place I am going to have be able to serve coffee.

My sisters are also big coffee drinkers, and if they visit me, of course, I am going to have to provide them with coffee.

I am looking for a coffee maker that is not too expensive, I am interested in quality, but I do not want one that will restrict the type coffee I can serve. If I want to have Jamaican Blue Mountain, Kona from Hawaii, or Santos from Brazil , or even brew Raffles Tea from Singapore, I want to be able to serve it

Ay recommendations on a coffee maker?

Get yourself a Turkish hand coffee mill. Fresh batch every time and no cleanup...plus you'll feel like you've earned that cup. Bought mine at Caravansary on Chestnut St. in San Francisco in 1973. Still works, but it's probably a bit dull by now. That will really impress your lady friend (or she'll think you are a pretentious kook).

I have to agree, I have one of those. Stay away from the plastic ones with a bunch of dividers and crevices to trap all kinds of nasty’s.
An old engineering designer mentor of mine schooled me on why milk cartons had as less folds and crevices as possible. I was told a pinch of salt makes a better cup of coffee.

but everyone I know who is has one of these.”

Would appear that not only do we not know one another but you don’t know any of my friends or family. All of us have Mr. Coffee, mine is about 9 years old, and we make 3-4 pots a day of fully leaded. One cup at a time? You’ve got to be joking.

Bunn commercial rig is the way to go. Spend the money just once. Uh, you will need quite a bit of counter space for it.

Ask your Sisters what coffee they like and how they like it made.

Keurig, hands down. Absolutely love them. And because it uses k-cups (pods) your lady friends can pick the coffee of their choice as it comes in all varieties and brands. Or they can choose tea, or apple cider, iced tea, lemonade, hot chocolate, all come in pods. Women love this, trust me. All my women friends and myself have Keurigs. You can’t go wrong. It makes different coffee cup sizes, and coffee in different strengths. You just can’t go wrong. Wish I had Keurig stock.

As for the Lady Video sitors I would suggest a variety of Red and White Wine and Gin and Vodka and Mix and lots of ICE.

Perhaps if your have to ask about Coffee - maybe you stay at home with Mom and Dad.

I gave mine to a cousin who was moving out of state. Hated it.

I had 2 Brewmasters and loved them. Both of them eventually started leaking though. They have seals or something that give out.

No matter what type of pot or coffee you use, add a good shake of Saigon cinnamon to the coffee before you brew. Makes a world of difference to the taste and doesn’t taste like cinnamon.

I also recommend French press and a bean grinder. I have an expensive espresso machine and my fav coffee is LaVazza - but I also have a French press I got on amazon.com. It’s stainless steel and will last you a lot longer than the glass ones. After living overseas for almost 30 yrs. I got used to the excellent espresso coffee and opted for my own machine upon returning to the states. The bean grinder is really the key to great tasting regular coffee. Get a burr grinder, not one of those cheap-o blade things (total waste of $$$). If you don’t want to go French press (downside is you have to reheat in the microwave if it cools down b/f you drink it) get most any cheap drip maker - but get the bean grinder. You won’t be sorry.

“The Keurig cups are outrageoey’d be goodusly expensive...
There’s no WAY I could possibly afford that!”

That’s a bunch of bahooey. I have a Keurig and you can buy the k-cups online cheap, by the box (usually 12, 18 to 24 pods per box). I get them at Amazon and Walmart online. Plus almost all grocery stores sell them too. They have smaller boxes of the k-cups and larger boxes with more in them, and in oompty-nine varieties and brands. You can’t go wrong, and don’t believe it that they are that expensive. I buy them all the time. They aren’t.

I might add, I’m a big tea drinker too, and get the tea k-cups for my Keurig. I love Twinings Earl Grey, and Celestial Seasonings English Breakfast tea, but you can get all kinds of teas to brew. So easy, so good. And you can switch between coffee, tea, hot cocoa, etc. in minutes. It only takes a couple of minutes between brews of k-cups. Make any variety you want as often as you want, one right after the other, if so inclined.

That thing (Keurig) makes the WORST coffee, ever! DO NOT BUY. Get the plug-in percolator.

Not a fan of big chain stores, but if you have a Bed Bath Beyond in your area, spend a bit more and buy there.

No questions asked return policy.

Check it out for yourself.

Avoid all the opinion and wasted time and just buy one until you find one that works for you.

Mr. Coffee. They last and are affordable. I HATE the Keurig we have at the office. Expensive, dirty, breaks down and you can only make one cup at a time.

Sorry. I had my laptop serviced a couple of weeks ago and ever since my keyboard jumps around while I’m in the middle of typing. Generally, I fix the typos, but I missed that one.

I think it was supposed to say that Keurig cups are good, but outrageously expensive.

When I buy a coffee maker the last brand I think of is Black + Decker. Oddly enough, it is the brand my wife and I bought a few weeks back. This may sound counterintuitive but we bought one without a warmer/heat pad. The coffee drains into a thermos that holds the common amount other carafts hold. And it works. The coffee stays hot, is not kept hot by the burner which gives you that crappy burnt smell after 90 minutes or so. It stays fresh after all that time and longer. Ive had coffee up to nearly three hours after brewing with no ill effects! Downsides? 1. Being a thermos you cant tell how much is left in it but you will figure it out. 2. The display is not lit and not angled upward so it can be tough to set but that is just a first world problem. Price? I forget, but the dames love a guy with fresh brew so it is worth paying thousands for blackndecker!

No it doesn’t. That’s your personal prejudice. The Keurig coffeemakers are just about the most popular ones out there. Sorry, but you are in a very tiny minority. Keurig’s are wonderful, and the proof is in the sales and the fact that other coffee machine makers started mimicking Keurig and now their are many other coffee machines out there that use pods. And the ease of use is one of the big factors, along with how quickly you can make a cup of coffee, one after the other, and can change the variety of drink you choose in a mere few minutes.
