The widening wealth gap in the United States is a worrisome sign that millions of families nationwide do not have enough in assets to offer better opportunities for future generations. Wealth allows families to make investments in homes, in education, and in business creation. On the basis of data collected using the National Asset Scorecard for Communities of Color (NASCC) survey, we report that, when analyzed by race, wealth accumulation is vastly unequal. By means of the NASCC survey, researchers have collected, for the first time, detailed data on assets and debts among subpopulations, according to race, ethnicity, and country of origin—granular detail ordinarily unavailable in public datasets. In this analysis we focus on estimates for U.S. born blacks, Caribbean blacks, Cape Verdeans, Puerto Ricans, and Dominicans in the Boston Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). Our analysis shows that with respect to types and size of assets and debt held, the data collected on white households and nonwhite households exhibit large differences. The result is that the net worth of whites as compared with nonwhites is staggeringly divergent.

It’s time to cut out this nonsense about needing to “act white”. According to Table 1 on page 9, whites have a median age of 55 and median income of 90,000. However, Asians have a median age of only 43 but a median income of 96,000. So, it’s obvious they need to start acting Asian!

When will they give credit to time in this country? Are we to assume that first generation immigrants are expected to have the same assets as those who have worked under capitalism for generations? And what about cultural norms or savers versus spenders? I grew up in post WWII America where just about everyone saved and tried to make a better future for their children. Now the reverse seems true as today’s “adults” seem to think it’s all about spending on themselves and that someone else will take care of their children or even them in old age.
Responsible behavior results in the accretion of wealth. My family arrived here in 1919 in the person of my paternal grandfather and in 1948 in the person of my mother, in each case without any tangible assets. The net worth of each successive generation has at least doubled when compared to the previous generation. I expect that my children will continue that trend.
The study was concerned about wealth, not income.
Although the sample sizes seem really out of whack.
Whites account for 74% of the population but they could find only 78 respondents?
Blacks account for 7% of the population yet they found 71 respondents?
Now they say they targeted specific zip codes, census blocks, etc. to get their samples.....on the other hand, is it possible that blacks/asians/hispanics/cape verdeans/etc. living in integrated neighborhoods are different?
I was born in Boston in 1932.
The rich people were white.
The poor people were white.

This study and much else that is in the news lately is in preparation for a massive ‘reparations’ push. And, though it pains him deeply, because Congress won’t act, Obama will have to do it by Executive Action.
He could do it by “evening out” bank accounts for a start.

My father was born in,and brought up in,Southie in the teens/20's/30's.He was Irish and back then the Irish were the n**gers of Boson.Employers routinely posted signs saying "no Irish need apply".
But he worked hard and bought a nice house in Waban (part of Newton) and had it paid off in 6 years while supporting a wife (Mom didn't "work") and 4 kids.
