Marine Corps special operators returning for New Orleans training

The last time Marine Corps special operators trained in New Orleans, military helicopters appeared suddenly in the night, dropping troops onto an Algiers building for a mock raid as thousands of people watched Endymion roll on Canal Street.

The Marines are coming back for more. A 10-day exercise begins Saturday (July 18), in the New Orleans area and two sites in Mississippi, a Marine Corps Special Operations Command spokesman said this week in alerting the public.

Calling it "realistic military training," the command puts Marines through scenario-based exercises in and near civilian communities "to replicate realistic conditions," Capt. Barry Morris said in a statement.

Local officials are aware of the exercise, which "is conducted in an environment that is controlled yet unfamiliar to the Marines being trained," he said. Working with local authorities "ensures our training is both safe and realistic," he said.

Morris said this exercise is not associated with Jade Helm 15, a Special Operations Command event that began this week in seven states, including Camp Beauregard in Pineville and Stennis Space Center in Mississippi.

This is nothing out of the ordinary here. The Marine Special Operation Forces usually train here about once a year.

Uh, to "to replicate realistic conditions"... where... exactly?

including Camp Beauregard in Pineville

Named for General Pierre Gustave Toutaint Beauregard, CSA! We must rename this facility as the name gives flashbacks to the days I was forced to work in the cotton fields and the overseer Mr. Bush wielded a whip on my back so much it bled from a hundred cuts. And Massa Reagan, he just stand by and laughed!

I didn't know the Marines had units designated as Special Operations. Would that be Marine Recon?

As far as I know the Marines still has recon but the special operation forces are supposed to be more on par with the Army special forces and Navy seals. The Marines recently renamed their special operation force to Marine Raiders. Semper Fi!

....”Would that be Marine Recon?”

No...it’s the old “FORCE Recon.” Now called MARSOC. Sounds the same, but the two units are quite different in mission.

Two things...

The Marines generally deny the existence of “elite” units among their ranks. There are no elites among the elites.

The Marines take same attitude toward their Special Operations Capable (MARSOC) as the British do towards their Special Air Service (SAS), and the Special Boat Service (SBS.)

The Marines, and the British, prefer these formations remain in the shadows and out of the limelight as much as possible.

New Orleans is the Headquarters for the 4th Marine Division.
The 4th MarDiv is comprised of all Marine Reserve Units.

Loved living near Lejeune and like the new NCIS New Orleans. Would actually like to visit. Not enough snow for a permanent transfer, though. Thanks for posting, will remember them in prayer while they do what they love.
