Windows 8.1 overtakes XP in market share as Windows 10 launch approaches, Windows 7 still leads

On the verge of Windows 10's release, its predecessor has quietly moved into the #2 spot for market share among operating systems. Windows 8.1 has now overtaken Windows XP, the one time king of all operating systems, but it's something of a hollow victory as Windows 7 still leads by a wide margin.

According to Netmarketshare, as of June 2015, Windows 8.1's usage has increased to 13.12% among all operating systems, while XP sits at 11.98% and Windows 7 still accounts for a dominant 60.98% share. These three OS' also represent the only three with double digit market share.

The numbers are especially interesting since it means that over the year that Windows 7 and 8.1 users will be eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 10, after it becomes available at the end of the month, things could change rather quickly. Certainly August's numbers will look very different. Windows 10 is actually currently on the list with .16% share, due to the people who are part of the Windows Insider program who are currently testing the new OS.

Don't expect Windows 7's monster share to disappear too quickly however. Many of its users will be businesses who won't consider the upgrade to Windows 10 until they know it will work well with the rest of their systems and won't cause them any problems. Still, it will be interesting to watch these numbers evolve over the next couple of months as Windows 10 certainly has the potential to own the operating system market for a very long time.

Look bud, I share my PC with my spouse. Do you think I am going to sit behind her shoulder for every time she opens a dancing kitty video? If you don’t understand the dynamics of that, I can’t help you.

I have two other computers with W7, and they load graphics just fine. And my two XP computers loaded graphics fine before the reformat.

It's just that MS doesn't offer upgrades for XP anymore, and there's some software I need for graphics that I'm not getting.

Aside from having to significantly change my whole mindset around operating a PC, I will admit they sure make these machines nicely. A lot of nice attention to detail to craftsmenship that has been missing in the traditional PC’s lately.

the licensed version of malwarebytes is excellent. that said i still run spybot and avira as well. different programs seem to catch different things better. lots of media sites have hacks and youvjust never know youre gonna hit a compromised page.

I used to design and develop computer controlled systems. To get the job done the software was written to optimise the capabilities of the h/w to maximize performance. S/w is a tool, not the master.

Where else do these viruses and malware come from if not from the sites you and your spouse visit? Just stop visiting those kinds of websites and you’ll rarely get infected.

It is funny though that you blame your spouse. LOL.

But it's quite possible to secure your Windows box.

I understand, and dealt with it pretty effectively for 32 years. (DOS ver 1.28 no less)The last root kit was the straw that broke the camels back. It slipped under MWB, even with a daily scan.

I agree. The interface on Windows * is just awful. I wrote better ones twenty years ago.

Somebody besides me still has XP?”

We still have XP running on a computer that is not connected to the Internet. It contains business related software on it that we bought in 1995 which works just fine for our purposes. This non-internet connected computer also contains all the financial records for our business as well as our clients. Run Windows 7 on the computers that are connected to the internet but have no software or information saved which has any value on them. Works just fine for us. The day I’m forced to go to Windows 10 is the day the doors close and I’m retiring.

...”Stay away from nasty websites and you won’t have to deal with viruses and malware”...

Not necessarily.... in my research I’ve come across those who hide beneath perfectly acceptable sites. Fortunately i have “alarms” in place and can escape.

Nasty websites? You got a list of those to avoid?

This does exist. There are plenty of "hosts file" websites that aggregate a list of bad websites including everything from malware and spam to porn and advertising websites.

You copy the text file to your Windows\system32\drivers\etc directory, and any sites in that list will redirect to your local machine.

Be forewarned, the lists are often very large (>5 MB) and can significantly slow down your website browsing. There are better tools out there, but this one's fool proof, as it never lets the traffic leave your machine to begin with.

I’ve been doing remote computing on a daily basis for over 43 years, not that it matters. Clearly it is not the length of experience one has since you complain of repeatedly getting infected even though you have 32 years of experience.

As long as you avoid problem websites (like the ones your wife visits prior to getting infected), turn off java, set up a strong firewall, and use effective antivirus apps, you will significantly cut down on viruses and malware attacks. I wouldn’t doubt that your apple is already infected with something.

I wouldn't say two PC's in 32 years qualifies as repeatedly. As you are probably aware Rootkits are a problem within themselves, especially those that fly under daily MWB scans. Let's just say that the time spent being household IS tech to deal with that is more than I liked, You can't argue the point hat iOS is less prone to that, so this seems to be a great alternative.

Most businesses with THAT type of market share wouldn’t need to continually reinvent it’s OS. Windows 7 is perfectly fine except it probably doesn’t have the latest in government-approved spyware and Hollywood piracy detection.

I went to the point of buying a backup copy of Win 7 in the event that I’ll need to reformat someday after Microsoft has abandoned the OS.

Exactly, I am very very aware of the ways to avoid potential virus traps. Links to other conservative sites here at FR are about as rowdy as I get.

Fortunately my security warns of those hiding in time for escape....Also I might get two or three attempts a year trying to lift my computer and it’s knocked down immediately.

Because I go all over the world for news sites it does increase your risk...so I’m fortunate to have good security.

If you were a bad guy, and you wanted to get “free money”, or “easy info”, which of these groups would you go after?

Other OS - 0%
Linux - 1.61%
Mac OS - 7.54 %
Windows - 90.85%

Interesting. So you are saying that market share is the singular reason that WIN is attacked so overwhelmingly more than iOS? I heard it was due to technological advantages. Maybe you know more about this than me. Please enlighten me.
