Mexico Shuts Down Trump's Fantasy About Them Paying For Border Wall

Before he had even officially announced his run for the GOP presidential nomination, Donald Trump was talking up his plan to make Mexico pay to build a massive wall along its border with the United States.

“They will pay for it because they have really ripped this country off,” he said in an interview back in May. “They have really taken advantage of us both economically and at the border. They will pay for that fence.”

And his position has not changed in the months since. Just this week, speaking to Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Trump reiterated the claim, saying, “We’re not paying for it. You know how easy that is? They’ll probably just give us the money.”

“I watch politicians come on: ‘Can you imagine, Sean, he’s saying Mexico’s going to pay? They’ll never pay.’ And I’m saying, that’s like a hundred percent,” Trump added. “That’s not like 98 percent. Sean, it’s a hundred percent they’re [going to] pay. And if they don’t pay, we’ll charge ‘em a little tariff. It’ll be paid. But we need the wall.”

Well, now the Mexican government has spoken and their message is: Not so fast.

“Of course it’s false,” Eduardo Sanchez, a spokesperson for Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto told Bloomberg in an interview last night. “It reflects an enormous ignorance for what Mexico represents, and also the irresponsibility of the candidate who’s saying it.”

“Mexicans in the U.S. work with passion, they do their jobs well,” Sanchez added. “His comments reflect an enormous lack of knowledge of the reality in the U.S.”

Of course, this is not the first time the Mexican government has had to correct Trump. Following the candidate’s controversial comments about Mexican “rapists”, Mexico’s Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong called the claims “prejudiced and absurd” and said Trump “surely doesn’t know the contributions made by migrants from practically every nation in the world, who have supported the development of the United States.

How GOP politicians think...

“Please pay for the wall.”

“No.”

“Oh well, I tried.”

How Trump thinks...

“You can agree to pay for the wall now, or will make life hell for you until you beg to pay for it. Oh, and by the way, I just abrogated NAFTA. How does a 25% tariff sound?”

Can someone help me out here?

I didn’t pay much attention, because I have no men to send out of the country, but wasn’t there some news items about new laws regarding US citizens being penalized for sending money out of the country, and/or being taxed on it?

How would that apply to money being sent “home” to Mexico, by either individuals or corporations?

“men” should be “money” in the first sentence.

The best wall, for any nation who has a decided enemy, bound and determined to enter illegally, with the intention of doing harm to that nation’s citizens, as drug lords and ISIS are, are Marines.

I’m not a Trump guy, but this article is more anti-Trump crap.

So Mexico dictates terms, and the author hops to. If the Mexicans pay for the wall, they won’t be doing it because they want to, they’ll be doing it because they have to.

If the turnabout of Ford not building the new plant in Mexico can be attributed to The Donald, then Mexico just made a big down payment.

Mexicans working the united states are Mexicans and are foreign nationals.

If Mexico won’t help secure the border then tax remittances 10% or so to pay for border protection.

If the Mexican people spent half the energy fixing their country that they do in destroying ours then maybe someday Mexico would be a place Mexicans don’t have to run away fro,

Hey I am no genius but it seems to me that we could subtract it from the 971 million in foreign aid we give them yearly...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_foreign_aid_received

It would be like if I was giving my kid $2000 a month and he broke the sliding door in the apartment downstairs.

Could I go OK 2000-500 to fix the door means you only get $1500 next month?

Wouldn’t that be making him ‘pay’ for it?

I’d really appreciate FREEPER input on this because almost everyone I’ve mentioned this to has given me a vacant stare back.

Tax remittances and there you go.

I keep seeing this idea casually thrown around. While I am strongly in favor of the idea, it is not something the president can do unilaterally. Congress would have to pass it, and it would be sure to be filibustered in the Senate. With that in mind, how do you think Trump would win over enough Dem senators to overcome a filibuster?

The bottom 25% of Mexico’s entire population lives in the US now and I cannot wait until we send most of them back!

I don’t care who pays for the wall, just build it!
