I’m guessing that’s photoshopped. I can’t imagine that F-8 staying in the air for more than a second with it’s wings folded. Besides, unless there was an electrical malfunction, an air/ground safety switch keeps the wings from being folded in the air.

Too fuñny. You notice the flashing lights and the sign warning drivers why the lights are flashing? For a couple of years, I was in the office on the first floor of Brightleaf Square (Durham, NC) below the camera in the majority of those clips. It was pretty crazy. You could pretty much count on every other day. The vast majority of truck drivers were hispanics. Watched the city spend a couple of days erecting an I-beam across the road about 10 feet out in front of the old concrete trestle bridge to protect it from wear and tear of getting hit constantly. No sooner did they put the lids on the black and yellow paint cans and drove away... WHAM! I guess replacing an I-beam is much cheaper than replacing a bridge... :-)

Looks like it has happened with various aircraft. In the F-8, the pilot took off from an airbase with the wings folded! Who needs that last 4 feet of wing anyway.   ;-)

Your linked website seems legit, so if they say it happened, I guess it did. It seems amazing to me that even if there was enough horizontal wing available to give the plane lift, how would the upturned ailerons allow the pilot to turn the aircraft?

Anyway, if there are any Navy or AF jet jockeys here at FR, I wish they would chime in.

Good question. I can't imagine the linkage would even be connected unless the wing is folded down. In the up position that wing would provide the ultimate in dihedral. Turning the plane at all with the rudder would have been a real trick.
