Pennsylvania teen gets up to 20 years prison for highway rock toss

A teenager apologized on Thursday to an Ohio teacher who suffered brain damage when her head was split open by a rock he dropped from a highway overpass, then faced a judge who sentenced him to up to 20 years in prison.

...

Her face disfigured by her injuries and frozen in a perpetual smile, Budd told reporters outside court, "I have bad days like anyone else."

After nearly dying in the July 11, 2014, incident, Budd lost use of one eye and has undergone at least six surgeries because of her injuries. She had been riding with her family to New York City to see a Broadway play when she was struck.

... Before the punishments were meted out on Thursday, Budd's husband told the judge that his wife was forever changed.

"This is a lifelong sentence for Sharon," he said, his voice wavering with emotion. "I love her dearly. She was the rock of our house."

20 years sounds like a good minimum

I remember some years ago some “teens” threw a cinderblock off an overpass onto a car on the highway. It killed the man driving the car, who happened to be a father of young children.

I remember the teensgot off with no jail time!

I agree. How do you like that puke addressing a woman 35 years his senior by her first name?

Yeah but unfortunately from reading the article this isn’t close to the minimum these idiots will serve.
I hope 6’6” 400lb Alphonse has husbands set up for these morons when they get to prison.
They should have been convicted of attempted murder charges. What did these feckless a$$holes believe was going to happen if they hit a car with the stone.
Some people are only alive because it’s against the law to kill them.

I agree, I’ve too many stories where these criminals get over light that 20 years seemed better than I expected. It’s that bad.

I totally agree with you

A coworker's spouse hit a rock dropped from an overpass. Damaged the hood of the RX-7, and scratched the windshield.

Growing up, some people dropped a manhole cover onto a VW Beetle, slicing it in two, killing the young woman driver. Chain-link fencing was installed outward, from underneath the overpasses, shortly thereafter.

Harder to bypass for larger objects, I guess, and messing up the accuracy when throwing past too.

According to the article, the sentence was 4 1/2 years to 20 years. If he serves 5 years I'd be surprised.

Seems like this kind of thing happens pretty often and the people caught are usually teenagers.

I did stupid things back when, and am glad it did not result in this injury, although it sure could have,

“Sharon, I’m sorry,” said Lahr, 18, of New Columbia, Pennsylvania, who was shackled and wearing an orange prison jumpsuit. “I feel horrible about what happened.”

Cut him some slack. He does feel horrible, you know. I think prison time will do him good. I hope he gets some excitement in prison and adds some length to his sentence.

There was an incident similar back in the ‘90s, in which three “teens” dropped a cinderblock onto a car going north on Route 81 between Syracuse and Watertown.

The driver of the car was a soldier returning to duty in Ft. Drum, and was killed.

The three who dropped the cinderblock were caught. IIRC, all got long prison terms, and the one who actually dropped the cinderblock got a life term with no parole for something like 50 years.

Good. “We didn’t think anything of it at the time. We didn’t think anyone would get hurt.”. Maybe they’ll learn to think in prison.

It SHOULD be a minimum, not the max - is what I was trying to say
