Monday, the regular season ends for minor league baseball fans. (With the exception of the Pioneer League, which ends on Tuesday.)
There are still more than half a dozen races going down to the last day of play. Teams still trying to clinch include the El Paso Chihuahuas and the Asheville Tourists.
If we look at the top 5 levels of the minors (AAA, AA, A+, A-, A short):
Most MLB clubs (20) have one or two affiliates making the playoffs. SIX MLB clubs have ZERO affiliates currently in the playoffs (ATL, WASH, MIA, COL, LAA, BOS). FOUR clubs have 3 or more:
HOUS 5 !! (every team)
TEX 3
PHIL 3
AZ 3
Winning teams does not necessarily mean great prospects, but the Astros look like they've built a winning organization from top to bottom. I will post below on the SEVEN undecided playoff spots remaining as scores come in.
Altoona Curve just clinched a playoff spot in the AA Eastern League, giving PITTSBURGH a third minor league playoff team.

We’re losing our Single-A team here in Savannah (the Sand Gnats), due to the lack of vision of the Mayor and City Counsel.
What is sad is that they are likely to when the Division Championship this year.
We’ll still have a team. Someone is going to put a college level rookie team here next year.

Springfield Cardinals just eliminated with a loss to Tulsa, 10-4.
This clinches the division for the Arkansas Travelers (LAA first playoff team).

MONDAY REVIEW:
S.A.L.: Asheville magic number is ONE over Greenville.
NYPL: 4 team scrum for 2 spots.

I don’t have the tiebreaker rules, but:
NW League: Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, trailing tonite 9-1, magic number is ONE to clinch over Eugene, who lost tonite.
PCL: El Paso has tiebreaker over Las Vegas.
El Paso has magic number of 2 entering play on Sunday.
35-year old, former 19-game winner, NYY Chien-Ming Wang tries to eliminate Las Vegas (Mets) tonite. He gets the start for Tacoma opposing LV.
Our youth baseball league uses minor league teams for the 4th and 5th grade teams. The Sand Gnats were a regular team. Along with the Lugnuts, Rockhounds, Lookouts and 51s. The minor leagues have great team names.
I think the Midland Rockhounds set the franchise record tonight with their 82nd win.

Sad to see Wang in the minors. That baserunning injury just derailed his career.

El Paso clinched Sunday, giving SD a 3rd playoff team.
El Paso won in the 10th. Wang went 8 innings to defeat Vegas on Sunday and eliminate them.
“The (Aberdeen) IronBirds can clinch a playoff spot with a win and a Staten Island loss or a West Virginia loss.” Which means Aberdeen has the tiebreaker over West Virginia. (And State College.)

6 teams involved.
New Britain Rock Cats (Conn.) about to play final game there, as the Eastern League team will move to nearby Hartford to become the Yard Goats (a term for a hard working locomotive I think?). In a few years the International League’s Pawtucket Red Sox hope to move to nearby Providence with a new stadium, though the proposal is still up in the air.
Saw a game of Altoona Curve last month on a nice night for baseball—fun stadium location surrounded by a hill and an old wooden roller coaster. Congrats on playoffs.
The Reds have a minor league system? Who would have thought it.
Columbia, SC. The government built them a big stadium and the Mets decided it was a better place.
The stadium here is a historical building. It has seen the likes of Babe Ruth, and Lou Gehrig (the teams would stop here for exhibition games on the way north from Spring Training) , even Dale Murphy (important to Georgians anyway). Jim Bouton(sp) pitched here in his comeback attempt.

The city wanted to build a new stadium for the team, but, do it on the cheap and more nefarious reasons are suspected (I have my opinions, but, I’ll leave it for the papers and FBI).
All they need to do is upgrade the infrastructure of the old stadium, we don’t need a new one.
I think the Mets had a farm club in Columbia once before.
True. George Steinbrenner used to insist on having winning farm clubs 'so they learn to win". Well, the minor league people would sign veterans, win a lot of games, and then not produce enough talent for the Yankees.
Things have changed somewhat under Hank and Hal Steibrenner.
