I was away for the weekend but finally have some time to respond to your comment.

Indeed the full quote does help. The Pope says "The cross shows us a different way of measuring success." How do you work that sentence into your claim that the Pope thinks the Cross was a failure "and leaves it at that". How can it the Cross be our very measure of success if it's a failure and he "leaves it at that"? Answer: he doesn't.

By the way, here's an article about a less-remarked upon sermon from a few months ago on the same topic. It is, like his comments at St. Patrick's, the most basic, normal, typical, common, standard and old-fashioned Christian teaching on the Theology of the Cross.

It is at the cross that God turns upside down our understanding of failure. Love triumphs at the cross; a place that would otherwise appear to one of defeat. "It is a scandal...but here is where love wins."

However, he also stressed that Christians will fail many times in their own journey, which "is a rough road".

He said "humanly speaking." That is, to the carnal-minded, to people who judge only by immediate appearances, and do not judge justly.

There are plenty of things to critique in terms of Pope Francis' words and policies. Have it it. This is not one of them.

The Pope is right, but only on a technicality. Jesus’ death on the cross was a complete 100 percent fulfillment of all prophecy made about his death. It could not have been any other way.

As such, even in human terms, to characterize this as a failure, especially when the POINT was that Jesus HAD TO DIE IN ORDER TO DEFEAT DEATH to show the Universe that He was the Christ by rising from the dead, is so maladroit that all it serves to do is confuse the faithful.

Such statements hardly bring people to Christ. I don’t know, all things redound to God’s will, so maybe this Marxist, Hollywood pope has some higher purpose in God’s plan.

“The only person who ever lived a perfect life is his (pope’s) boss.”

Really? Satan lived a perfect life?
