50-lane highway resembled car park

Vehicles are seen stuck in a traffic jam near a toll station as people return home at the end of a week-long national day holiday, in Beijing, China. (Reuters) You might never complain about the morning rush hour again in your life after you see how thousands of cars in China were brought to an absolute halt at a toll booth in an epic traffic jam.

As many as 50-lane highway resembled a huge car park when almost half of China's 1.3 billion people returned to work after the National Day holiday, reports 9news.com.au.

After the long weekend away, this incredible bottleneck hit the residents hard as a checkpoint reduced the 50-lane freeway to just 20 lanes.

Not only Beijing, but cities like Shanghai and Nanjing also witnessed horrific traffic jams.

According to China's National Tourism Administration estimates, between October 1 and 7 more than 750 million Chinese were on the move.

Looks like white is the most popular car color.

Imagine that not so very long ago, this was the typical scene in Chinese cities.

Last time I drove through Atlanta, it’s 8 lanes was too much for me...Beijing has 50 lanes? Hard to imagine.

Maybe, but I live in the close-in DC suburbs and the traffic issues here are legendary.

It’s a toll plaza.

Not a normal highway.

From my experience riding in Chinese taxis, the lane lines are irrelevant anyway - their preferred tactic is to drive straddling the line at about 20 mph faster than the flow of traffic, then when another car appears ahead quickly cut left or right depending on which lane that car is in. :)

Simple. Drive where the other vehicles aren’t.

I think the stop at the toll was more of an issue then the traffic...

Who designs a highway to go from 50 lanes to 20 lanes anyway...?

In Florida we don't have many toll roads but we have SunPass to prepay the toll at a reduced rate and zip right on though...
