Mets Get Revenge, and Then Some
NY Times ^ | 10-13-2015 | TIM ROHAN

Yoenis Cespedes stood near the batter’s box for a moment, holding his bat, watching the fastball he had crushed into the second deck of the left-field stands. Cespedes took a few steps, flipped his bat high into the air and rounded the bases. The theme song from “The Natural” pumped through Citi Field, fireworks exploded and Mets fans hugged one another, screaming.

The three-run homer essentially ended Game 3 of this National League division series in the fourth inning on Monday night. From there, the Mets cruised to a 13-7 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers to take a two-games-to-one lead in the best-of-five series. Cespedes’s home run was estimated to have traveled 431 feet.

Mets fans could not help rubbing it in. Not long after Cespedes crossed home plate, they chanted: “We want Ut-ley! We want Ut-ley!”

It was the baseball equivalent of a crowd cheering for a bull to gore a matador. In Game 2 on Saturday, the Dodgers’ Chase Utley had broken Ruben Tejada’s right leg on a violent slide into second base, a play that proved critical in the Mets’ losing the game. Utley apologized, but was clear that neither the Mets nor their fans would forget the play for the rest of the series.

Utley is a bum! GO METS!

(Apologies if this is a duplicate post. I thought I had posted it a few minutes ago, but either I screwed it up or it was disappeared. Wondering if there are any Dodger fans here with Moderator rights... :-)

Our local media has replayed that slide over and over. Maybe it’s because of my bad eyesight, but I saw no intentional wrongdoing. It looks to me like an accident.

I have a soft spot for the Cubs. If the Mets don’t make it I would probably pull for the cubbies.

Here's something I don't get:

If the Dodgers weren't going to start Utley in this game, then why did he bother appealing his two-game suspension? As it turns out, he would have been halfway through the suspension right now by missing a game where he didn't play anyway.

Utley is a bum!

Even though the Phillies suck, they were smart enough to unload this scumbag.

Thank you. I had no idea Mets fans were such whiney wussies. I thought New Yorkers were more intelligent fans. Maybe just the fans in the other borough.

This play was nothing out of the ordinary. There are slides like this every day of the season. No one commentating the game had any problem with the slide. It happened because the toss to Tejada was poor and he ended up spinning backwards in an unusual way. Go Dodgers. I am forever tainted against the mets now because they are acting like whiney babies. They are acting like liberals shouting fake outrage.

It’s not about the takeout play
It’s what MLB in NY right after that is the issue.
They reversed the out call and put Utley back on second with one out.

Well, somebody has to do the whining since the Red Sox have taken the post season off...

IF you appeal, then you can play and any suspension will be served in the future after you have been declared guilty.

It’s a tactic.

It wasn't an accident, it was a sloppy tackle which began about a foot before the base and about three feet outside the baseline. A typical slide will begin about 10 feet before the base with the base being the target........

What is confusing to me is Utley never tagged the base and he was called safe. Just getting close counts? Then getting close should count at home base too. OIC now, his intention was to tag the base, that’s it. Maybe it is rated on whom was closer to the base during the play is awarded the call!! Kinda like Obama’s world, his intentions are what counted and not the results.

Actually, the Cubbies are my first choice, then KC.

But I like the Mets, too - especially after this weekend.

I’m very democratic (forgive that usage) so, hopefully, one of my teams will win!
