In a recent appearance with Glenn Beck, Carson was asked whether or not he shared the majority view among Republican presidential hopefuls that he thought the Department of Education should be shut down and its responsibilities delegated to the states. Carson assumed a wry smile. I actually have something I would use the Department of Education to do, he coyly teased. It would be to monitor our institutions of higher education for extreme political bias and deny federal funding if it exists.
This is an atrocious, petty, vindictive proposal that is antithetical to any conservative value. Not only would Carson not dissolve the Department of Education, he would expand its powers; and over free and unfettered speech in private institutions, no less. Whats even more terrifying is that he would have this federal agency target political speech he personally does not like, which is more poisonous than any of the practices in which Americas intellectually homogenous college campuses are presently engaged.

I don’t find Carson “bizarre” but he definitely doesn’t light my fire.
He could clarify and say what he meant was that he would do the same thing Obama is doing.
The secret to political correctness on college campus is the student loan program and federal funding! If the colleges were forced to use endowments for maintenance of the curriculum and people could not get free money or nearly free money for tuition these colleges would be force to lower prices and change curriculum to entice the student body to enroll. I believe in the free market and college is not a free market and hasn’t been for many years!!!
Dr. Carson is on my list of “Candidates for whom I will not vot for during the Primary but I am willing to vote for in the General.”
He seems like a very nice man but I just don’t see him functioning as president.
He would make a good secretary of DHHS or surgeon general but that’s about it.
You would think a Jewish magazine would recognize irony. Carson knows that ideologues have taken over the schools and colleges. He is just talking about the worm turning on the marxists.
Carson is for amnesty I will never vote for anyone that is for amnesty. Right now Trump has my vote, Cruz and Paul are maybes. Santorum is also good on immigration but he is so far down in the polls he doesn’t count.
It’s not just the media. In response to the quote “I don’t particularly like the idea of government subsidies for anything because it interferes with the natural free market,” Carson said” - a FReeper on another thread called Carson an “ethanol pimp”.
Carson is implying that the universities that stack their faculties with leftists might be induced to give conservatives a better chance for open jobs.
Its not a "hit piece". The media is covering what he said. He espoused a policy he would consider implementing as president. It should be helpful to readers get a bearing on Carson. Not much is known about the guy. Now that the media has started to cover him (he's for amnesty, he's not a solid supporter of the 2nd Amendment, he's for subsidizing ethanol (30%) gasoline, etc.) he's not going to be the choice of conservatives.
If he keeps getting exposure, and more of his beliefs become known, he's toast in the Republican party nomination process. Ben Carson, meet Herman Cain.
Carson has a very understated sense of humor in addition tom being plain spoken. He says something commonsensical like some convicts come out of prison as homosexuals because they have been used and abused by other cons for years and people go nuts.God, havent they seen Shawshank Redemption?
Well, this is a rather bizarre response for a supposed conservative.
Use the government to monitor and punish political bias. Because no Democrat would ever abuse that to, say, go after Hillsdale College or the Claremonts.
This just confirms for me that Ben Carson’s instincts are not liberty-oriented, but are basically just more big governmentism.
Why is it so different from farm subsidies in general, or subsidies for the Majors that were designed originally to help independent oil producers? Life is complicated. Dontyou remember how Paul Harvey, the conservative was such a shill for ethanol? It was supposed to be a fix for the depletion of our oil reserves. Politics works by fits and starts and people thrash around adjusting to real or imagined crises.
...a FReeper on another thread called Carson an ethanol pimp.
Does the shoe fit?
Here is the fuller context, giving a better perspective:
“Newly minted Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson told an Iowa audience on Tuesday that he would use the savings from ending oil industry subsidies to pay for new ethanol blending stations.”
“Carson, in his first speech in the state as a candidate, was asked by a voter about the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), the federal mandate that fuel refiners blend a certain volume of ethanol and biodiesel into their gasoline and diesel supplies. “I don’t particularly like the idea of government subsidies for anything because it interferes with the natural free market,” Carson said, according to The Des Moines Register.”
Therefore, I would probably be in favor of taking that $4 billion a year we spend on oil subsidies and using that in new fueling stations” for 30 percent ethanol blends, he added.”
Abolish the Federal Department of Education, it is as simple as that, not saying it will be easy but it is simple, it would also be simple if we get a conservative POTUS and he has a conservative congress instead of the uni-party we have now.
Cruz is a strategist when campaigning for the General he will also be campaigning to get as many conservatives in the congress as possible, he knows he can’t do it all himself he will need a strong congress, he is not running for himself by himself, he intends to restore our Constitutional Free Republic.
Yep, I got it. A statement based in sarcasm and irony. Also ironic; conservatives acting the same way they accuse liberals of acting, humorless
I prefer ‘Rino’
Dr. Carson has a bit of problem figuring out WHAT he is for day to day. Sometimes he is for gun control, other times he opposes. Ditto for Amnesty. His latest is “Let undocumented immigrants (aka illegal aliens, or, more accurately, invading barbarians) work on farms.”
I get the impression of someone who wants to fix things but isn’t entirely certain how, or what resources might be at his disposal.
In other words, someone who has no business being President.
