From 1937 to 1949 I received an excellent grade and high school education in a public school. I recently attended the 66th anniversary reunion of my graduating class. All my classmates had successful careers, some as blue collar workers, some as professionals of one kind or another.
Clearly public schools at one time did their job. Something has happened since I went to school to make things worse.
My children were all sent to Catholic schools, because I could see the public schools were becoming disaster areas.
My grandchildren are for the most part being home schooled.
I offer no explanations or recommendations except home school your children.
Ya problem is that they are ignoring the real problem — single parent families and chaos at the home.
When a child lacks a secure home with loving parents and one or both parents are gone, doing drugs, criminals, don’t value an education, etc. then education is way down the list of priorities.
On the other hand, most teachers work hard and do their best. Heck, they probably hate the system too but they go along with it because they know that they will become an outsider, too.
My son received a very good education from his public schools. However, it follows the rule: “it is what you make of it.”
We were concerned that the school drove him too hard. The sky was certainly the limit if he wanted it. However, we looked for balance and he started his freshman year at the local university and he is doing well (so far, cross my fingers).
The key point here is that my wife are married, and we provided a stable environment for our son, and we both value education. We are not smarter than anyone else or richer. The recipe is simple.
