That is one cool sword, almost a work of art. I'll bet they don't come cheap.
My backup weapon is an 18" serrated machete from Harbor Freight Tools, item #69910. It is all steel, sharp as h3ll and has one edge with saw teeth, great for trimming and clearing vegetation or using on home invaders. Harbor Freight often has them on sale for $5. No work of art, but effective and inexpensive to replace as needed.

I keep the Boshi on my katana razor sharp and make sure the Kissaki is needle sharp. Also learned fencing. So that blade can be used to stab.
It’s not about the weapon. It’s about the training and will to use one.
JMHO, of course.

Sorry if this is a repeat. The answer is “ANY one you have trained with and have the will use.”

Yes, I should think a gladius would be excellent.

Sparred with European style swordsmen. Not a lot of pretty there, but VERY EFFECTIVE, esp. longsword, bastard sword, and duel wielded style.
The key: trained and practiced beats thug. Always.

That is a pretty rural part of Connecticut. Normally you wouldn’t expect to find homeless burglars in the far eastern part of the state. They usually get no farther than New London or Willimantic.

Katana is fine, but you must train to perfection. Axes, thrusting swords, even a staff is fine too, but same caveat.

...his three dogs then chased the suspect off the porch before flagging down a passing car, according to the Bulletin of Norwich.
Those are really smart dogs!

Never, ever, ever, bring a sword to a gunfight....there is a great commercial on lately that shows a sword expert drawing a sword, slashing and waving it, pointing it toward a cowboy who merely pulls a gun and shoots him....I’m not certain what the commercial is about, but it certainly makes a point!!!!

Ramius - you’re welcome. :-)
“Stick ‘em with the pointy end.”
Enjoyed reading the responses, lot’s of great ideas, however the homeowner used what he had on hand and with enough skill and/or enthusiasm that he protected his family this time. Now is the time for him to rethink his armaments.
