Going from plumbing to a composting toilet is the equivalent of going from a cell phone to two cans and a string.

Fungal decomposers don’t like and can’t work while frozen.

They’re great for camping and cabins. The expensive ones work well for RV’s.

You ‘go’, then dump in some sawdust or dried leaves. If you use the nicer ones, the lids seal when they’re closed so that there’s no smell. The *really* nice ones have an exhaust fan that turns on when the lid is lifted.

One person should have to dump the container once a week. So if you have two people, twice a week and so on. You can get one where you pull the container from the outside so you don’t have to carry it through the house.

The contents go into a compost pile and they have to be composted for a full year before use in a garden.

I would absolutely use one under certain circumstances and I’ve even considered it for a guest cabin. (If my guests don’t like it, they can go home.)

If I ever have to replace my septic tank and drain field I’m just going to skip it and go with a holding tank and have it pumped out every couple of years.

You can’t urinate in them as it disrupts the composting process.

I would suggest going to either boating forums or RV forums to look for good info.

Boat Design Net forums has a search feature for thread topics.

Compost a toilet? Seems to me it would take quite awhile to break down.

They're quite helpful for a self-sustaining tomato garden. :-)

Just make sure you start out by eating only heirloom tomatoes.

Two words: Out House

That works.

I heard them referred to as "Rockefeller" toilets. Years ago, in the mid-1970s, I came across some wannabe Adirondack hippies. Their school bus vehicle ran on methane, served us cooked milk weed, etc, and they said they were waiting to get a Rockefeller [composting] toilet for the house.

Some Rockefeller was importing them, probably from Europe, at the time.

Also, the US Park Service (Clinton/Gore years) put in a bunch of solar powered (for the ventilation) ones, and managed to place the majority in the shade, leading to a raft of complaints about the stench.

We use then on remote fishing trips in Manitoba and they work fine. Your using a container that will have to be emptied from time to time, dig a hole ans dump it in. Keep a bag of fresh compost by the toilet and throw in a couple of scoops when your done. The sign says “When you take a poop, leave a scoop”. No smell at all other than the smell of compost.

I live on a sailboat and have done extensive research. There are three name brands. Airhead, C-Head and Natures Own. All three of these seperate the solids from the liquids. Do your own research and you will find all the info that you need.

I remember reading in the Farmer’ Almanac an ad for something called an “Incinolet”.Apparently the contents get incinerated after use.

Man, would you have a nasty surprise if THAT malfunctioned!
Gives me nightmares.... !!!

MS Toilet 2.0.1 requires constant upgrades and suffers from frequent stoppages and blue screams of death when the tank water explodes. Go with the Apple Toilet, it’s more PC and Earth friendly.
