Supervolcanoes likely triggered externally
Science Daily ^ | November 4, 2015 | University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Supervolcanoes, massive eruptions with potential global consequences, appear not to follow the conventional volcano mechanics of internal pressure building until the volcano blows. Instead, a new study finds, such massive magma chambers might erupt when the roof above them cracks or collapses.

Knowledge of triggering mechanisms is crucial for monitoring supervolcano systems, including ones that lie beneath Yellowstone National Park and Long Valley, California, according to the study led by Patricia Gregg, University of Illinois professor of geology, in collaboration with professor Eric Grosfils of Pomona College and professor Shan de Silva of Oregon State University. The study was published in the Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research. Gregg also presented the findings this week at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America.

"If we want to monitor supervolcanoes to determine if one is progressing toward eruption, we need better understanding of what triggers a supereruption," Gregg said. "It's very likely that supereruptions must be triggered by an external mechanism and not an internal mechanism, which makes them very different from the typical, smaller volcanoes that we monitor."

This is an interesting idea. I'd always thought that the bouncy of the mainly felsic magma in comparison to the rock surrounding the magma pool and the large amount of gas and water would force the eruption to the surface. There the lack of containing rock would allow a monster eruption.

However this analysis of fault or roof collapse is quite logical as well. It would introduce a lot more unknowns into the study of monster volcanos. Faults are quite common and active in Yellowstone and Long Valley as a for instance. Not a reassuring thought.

It does make sense as the precipitating cause for a massive caldera type eruption with a crater miles across, like past Yellowstone events.

Humans obviously cause super volcanos. Need more taxation.

Of course they were triggered externally... by hydrogen bombs!

Okay....utter wackiness aside....when I saw the headline, my first thought was “Wouldn’t (ISIS/AlQaeda/assorted Muslim nutjobs) love to get a hold of a nuke and try something like that?”.

Think about it: if what this scientist is saying has a kernel of truth to it, what better way to cripple “the Great Satan” than to trigger a supervolcano and wipe out a good chunk of the US food production?

I know it’s a longshot, but an interesting and scary proposition nonetheless.

No, some guy named Rex Lutheran or something used it to create some ocean front property. I read it on the internets, so it must be true:

Xenu sent out Tax Audit demands to all these billions of people. As each one entered the audit centers for the income tax inspections, the people were seized, held down and injected with a mixture of alcohol and glycol, and frozen. Then, all 1.4 trillion of these frozen people were put into spaceships that looked exactly like DC8 airplanes, except that the spaceships had rocket engines instead of propellers.

Xenu's entire fleet of DC8-like spaceships then flew to planet Earth, where the frozen people were dumped in and around volcanoes in the Canary Islands and the Hawaiian Islands. When Xenu's Air Force had finished dumping the bodies into the volcanoes, hydrogen bombs were dropped into the volcanoes and the frozen space aliens were destroyed.

However, Xenu's plan involved setting up electronic traps in Teegeack's atmosphere which were designed to trap the souls or spirits of the dead space aliens. When the 1.4 trillion spirits were being blown around on the nuclear winds, the electronic traps worked like a charm and captured all the souls in the electronic, sticky fly-paper like traps.

IRS at the center of ot all. Makes perfect sense to me.

You beat me to it. I bet they find that fracking and CO2 can cause eruptions. But only more money and research will tell for certain.

Yep. Also men in dresses not being allowed to take a leak in the women's rest room.

I say we need to get the EPA to start investigating this one as soon as possible!

This article reads like a setup by very cagey liberals who just know nobody will figure out that they are smokin’ our heads with BS so they can tap funding for more alleged study, and live happily ever after off the taxpayer’s dollars.

Agreed. EPA needs to move all its resources inside the magma chamber beneath Yellowstone.

That would work too. I was just being sarcastic given the EPA's rip-roaring success in investigating those closed mines in Colorado. With that kind of bang-up work by the EPA we could count on them triggering the mother of all super-volcanoes if they were to investigate the Yellowstone.
