Web scum foiled in Win 10 net ship.
Microsoft has nixed the ability for its Edge browser to run unsigned dynamic link libraries (DLLs) in a move that will make life hard for dodgy extensions and ad injector merchants.
Edge senior program manager Crispin Cowan says the update was dropped last week in the latest Windows 10 update and follows Redmond's plan to harden its web browsing asset.
Last May Microsoft killed ActiveX and Browser Helper Objects making Edge faster and more stable, Cowan says.
"Web browsers are an attractive target, because in-browser advertisements can be a significant source of revenue," Cowan says.
"Developers who are determined to tamper with the user’s settings may resort to injecting DLLs into the Edge process, bypassing the built-in interfaces for settings controls.
"This is a common reason why some users end up with toolbars installed or third party content injected on pages without their intent or consent."
Cowan says advertising injectors will pull down extra malicious content leading to thorough hosing of browsers and at best an increase in attack surface.

I tried Edge. Which is why I use Chrome.
Hey, they back-ported the so-called spyware, so why not something we want?

Similarly, I'm using Firefox -- and also because Firefox runs on all my platforms: Windows, Mac, Linux. I can't use a browser that only runs on one platform.
Nonetheless, Edge has some nice characteristics under Windows, and I'd like to see it on all the Windows operating systems, even if it'll never make it to OS X or Linux.
We got what we paid for ... and less.
Seems like the real story is that Microsoft is following the trend of Firefox and removing features from its browser, removing options that users used to have, because some users are too stupid to figure out how to use them properly.
If you want to punish everyone because the minority can’t help themselves from clicking every link they see, fine, but don’t tell me that it’s an upgrade.
Chrome works with Windows, Mac and Linux.
Hence why I have to revert to Internet Explorer. Edge out of the gate hardly worked as an explorer replacement, and now it is crippled. Wiser would have been to disable these features so that those who know what they are doing could enable them.
Unless you redefine the word, I call BS on the part about eliminating “crapware”. All the new PC’s come pre-loaded with it on purpose.
Props, seriously? I keep getting Windows 10 popups on my screen to get me to their upgrade Office.
It was Microsoft that put that crap in the browsers to start with. Bloatware is your enemy.
this is a move by google, microsoft and yahoo to cut out 3rd party ad systems so that they can have a monopoly.
They are warring against flash for the same reason... only they should be able to sell ads on the internet...not you or some other company with a good idea.
The entire internet is being taken over by the world wide web consortium (w3c) and being turned into a tool to study and influence your thoughts, habits and actions.
If your company doesn’t have a seat at the table, then you will be forced to collaborate with or sell to someone that does.
You are the product, not the customer or the client...just like the pig in the slaughter house complaining about the quality of the slop. (metaphorically of course)
My bad, I meant the stuff that gets downloaded via browser hijacking by ads and such, not the crapware that comes pre-installed by an OEM manufacturer.
These days I only install clean purchased-from-Microsoft releases of Windows (or MSDN .ISOs) so it's been ages since I had to deal with a pre-loaded crapware-laden installation. Those pre-installed systems are a nightmare, and you'll never get back those hours of your life you spent cleaning their awful crap off the disk.
I do computers for a living, and that's just too many hours that I could have spent more productively. Like FReeping. :-)
Well, not for those obnoxious Win10 upgrade ads, that's quite true. I was speaking only of their efforts to make a browser that's reasonably clean and secure.
You'd be amazed.
Hell, 100's of thousands of people still respond to email spam to buy Viagra and other drugs, specialty products, etc.
You. Would. Not. Believe. It.
And even so, what are the expenses for a spammer? Whether they send out 10,000,000 or 100 emails, or set a ad on a web site only 100 people go to or 10,000,000, it all costs the same—cheap!
If only 1 in 25,000 buy their product, the advertising cost versus profit is still decidedly in their favor.
Indeed, while I tried Edge, which is why I use Firefox as my main browser. To each his own on this, but as one who usually has about 100 tabs open, I want multiple tab rows, the ability to reduce tab width, and to toggle (ctrl+tab) btwn most recent tab (TabMixPlus), different colored tabs (Colorful Tabs) and save sessions (Session Manager), use custom scripts to do things like format to html as for FR (BBcodXtra), and do things GooglebarLight enables, and many other things enabled by FF extensions, but not for Chrome.
Too spoiled perhaps.
