Interesting. One cannot help but suspect that the author, a gay male, has a somewhat ulterior motive for public nudity and is bewailing the fact that it is not altogether attractive to some of us, and belittling those of us for whom this is the case as being immature. This is more properly to be discussed under the rubric of inhibition, I think, and as one of the "older guys" he cites I will confess it seems to be easier for me as a consequence of my experience in school and service communal showers than it might be for those who haven't the privilege of experiencing that sort of thing. It doesn't mean I like it, it just means that it doesn't matter all that much.

Nevertheless, I can't see anything all that wrong with a little natural modesty, either. Methinks the laddie doth protest too much.

I've noticed this. I think it is the self-consciousness induced by the thought that there could be homos watching. One of the side-effects is that lots of kids come to train for team sports at my gym, but don't shower after practice at the gym--or, going by the atmospheric evidence, at any time. They reek. You can tell when they've been in the elevator. This will not be good for public health. When I was in school, any kid who tried to skip the shower after practice would be thrown in with his clothes on.

That's okay, there is a new motivation that solves this problem. These men can shower with the women and not be refused access to check out their neighbors.

Modesty is a major Christian concept and virtue includes modesty. Communes (collective/socialistic) cultures were the “nude” ones-—where everyone is reduced to animal-—only humans wear clothes and think dignity is acquired by having the concept of privacy-—esp. about intimate matters which can’t be moral if a “group” thing. Humans are designed to unite one man with one woman.....and to not commit and take responsibility for the dignity of that person and the “Love” that is needed to be EXCLUSIVE for happiness and security. People need love and to be completed by the opposite sex to fulfill their design. To be used and tossed is devastating for the human psyche. All humans need to feel special and intimate with one other for life.

Individualism (Christianity) is what created Western Civ and the Age of Reason/Modern Science and dignity and worth of the individual included marriage of one man to one women—which took morality and modesty to respect the nature of male and female which is DIFFERENT and unique.

Not teaching the virtue of modesty is destroying the civility and the intimate/private “nature” of human beings. Privacy is essential to dignity of humans unlike other animals.

Dogs have sex in public—moral people know that intimacy requires privacy-—it is why all immoral, evil vile cultures always had major orgies which always includes children (like Afghanistan today and Greeks/Samurai of yesterday). All evil people use others as if they are dogs-—to be used and tossed. There can be no Freedom and no civil society when the masses are evil and cultures are socialistic—no privacy. Mystery and curiosity is what drives civilization and improves it and makes it so fun.

Western Civ (Christian cultures) far exceeded all other cultures to the EXTREME because of Romance/Chivalry/Modesty and that curiosity and excitement and “HOPE” (esp. in childhood and why innocence is so important in children). Modesty is essential for Romance and the beauty and excitement in human life. No surprises and you have a boring, dull life,

This column reminded me of the California court case in which a screwed up (”trans-gendered”) boy wanted to use the girls locker room. The school elected to let him do so but put in privacy curtains for the girls. He sued to force them to take the curtains out. No resolution yet. But if it were my kid sister in the locker room being forced to undress in front of him I would find him and issue extensive corrective therapy to him.
