The winter solstice occurred a few minutes ago at 0449GMT on 12/22/2016.
The sun reached its lowest (most southerly) position in the northern hemisphere and now will begin to arc across the sky at a higher (more northerly) track until June 21st.

Day length is quasi sinusoidal. At the trough many nights are equivalent. Hope your solar array has a good battery bank and you keep your wicks trimmed and burning...
