Missouri has horrible flooding right now as a levee along the Mississippi was breached. Are you okay?
We have been to a casino in Alton twice and Alton is now flooded and likely got that casino.
Let us hear from you.
The Air Force sent him to Alaska and he was the cook/chef for the Air Force there. Most people do not know Alaska is a training area for special forces. They deploy from there where there is an emergency in some part of the world - such as Benghazi.
Then, something happened to the communication equipment from that Alaska base and they were cut off, no communication was happening. Sooo, the cook/chef Johnny, being an electronic expert, asked for permission to work on it and he fixed their communication equipment. He got a special commendation from the Air Force for being able to restore their communication. I have seen his military medals and that commendation bar along with the written commendation.
If anything breaks, it is Johnny who can fix it. He is so special.
What a great story, Marcella! Thank you for sharing it.
I was amazed by the one where he survived a fall in the wilderness, ruptured his spleen and was eventually found, was in the hospital for a long time and they had to replace most of his blood, he had lost so much. Wish I could remember more of that.
Wow- a great story of a true American hero.
Thanks for sharing.
Continued prayers for JRF.
Here is that story:
So, we are past the last Air Force hitch. He is single and at some time a lady was wanting to marry him - really badly wanted to marry him. Sooo, he left civilization and headed to the mountains of New Mexico - she could not get to him there. :o) He lived like a hermit for a year, built a little shack/house and built a way to have electricity. I have seen his pictures of his building efforts. He had a friend who owned that land and let him live there. He occasionally would see this man as the man's house was some distance away.
In the winter, snow and ice happened. One day he went on a trek over the landscape, think he was hunting for meat animals, and suddenly he fell down the mountain. The ice and snow had built up in that spot where he stepped and there was no ground underneath. He lay there for some time with his blood running out of him but it was very cold so that helped slow down his body processes and use less oxygen to keep him alive. He was found, I believe by the man who owned the land.
He was mostly dead by then. The doctor at the hospital did not give him much hope of living. They removed one kidney and his spleen and some amount of intestine/colon. He had broken ribs also. Well, he lived. By the time he got out of hospital, he found out the woman who wanted to marry him had married someone else. He came back to civilization.
He is special.
He is special. He even tried some of our Alaskan food when he was there. He wasn’t impressed with our “Alaskan spinach”.
Just a quick checking in, and noticed your question. We are fine. As with any flooding, it always sounds on TV as if the whole of the area is flooded, but so far, it’s been the usual areas.
Alton almost always makes the news, Defiance, Pacific, Festus and Crystal City are also some outlying areas that have areas that flood. Closer in to the Metro Area, the Meramec Bottoms area floods.
Most of the roads between here and St. Louis have been reworked and raised as have the bridges. However there is a low spot along I55 north of Crystal City/Festus that nearly flooded in the big floods of the early 90s.
St. Louis City uses flood gates to protect the waterfront area, but sometimes the basements of the businesses in that area get backed up.
Nothing to worry about here in that regard. Staying indoors-hate the cold and rain in the winter. Had a very very light dusting of snow this AM. Thanks for asking.
Thanks for sharing that. Continue to Pray daily. Really miss Johnny’s posts on this and other threads.
Glad to know you are okay.
Marcella
He is indeed very special!
Marcella, thanks for sharing the rest of that. I don’t remember him including the part about the woman, just the injuries. But it doesn’t surprise me. Hope you are able to get another visit with him. Thanks to all the Freepers who have prayed and sent cards and packages.
We love you Johnny. (((Hugs)))
Ok here’s an update on the flooding. I55 is now the only major North South road still open into St. Louis. The flood stage is now predicted to exceed the prior record in 93 by 4 feet.
All efforts are being made to keep I55 open. However, looking at the photo of the I55/Meremac Bottom Road intersection, I am dubious that they will be able to keep it open-but maybe they will be able to.
Even then, there is another point further south where water lapped the shoulder of I55 in 93. My daughter needs to make it over the Meremac River and past that point to get home tonight. I have advised her to stay in St. Louis, as I55 is right now a giant parking lot. Hope she listens.
Going back to tracking the flood now.
Could you put my Christmas present in the attic before the boat takes you to Hilltop?
Flood update. I55 North and South bound closed at around 9pm last night. However, the bridge on Telegraph road remained open till around 10am today.
Even though the areas to the sides of Telegraph were flooded up to the telephone poles, the water was not yet over the roadway.
Daughter made it over just before they closed the road this AM. Since there are several areas south where that road is flooded, she then had to cut back over to I55.
She is safely home after spending the night in St. Louis.
No way in or out of St. Louis across the Meremac at this point. Meremac is expected to crest about now. Mississippi will crest in the wee hrs on New Yrs. day. All flood gates are up in St. Louis City, including the double gates.
Praying for all who have lost loved ones, homes, and are sick or injured during this record flood. Many have evacuated and just waiting to see what will be left.
LOL. I guess I could, but we live near the hilltop, on one of the steepest hills in the area, so it would be safe even in the basement.
That sounds delish! I’ve never actually tried to cook a prime rib, but I do like oven meals in the winter-easy and extra heat to boot.
I don’t get KY3 on this side of the state. Our local TV is from St. Louis. I grew up watching KY3 though.
Sounds like you need to be playing surfing songs to go with the yuletide songs. LOL
