You are indeed blessed to still have your father with you at Christmas. Mine departed in 2008 on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor - a fitting day to end a life devoted to service of his community, but I still miss him so much.

A fascinating memory. What county did you grow up in?

My Granny’s house was on a 20 acre small dairy farm. It was just 3 big rooms. The bedroom was big enough for 2 double beds. The living room had the wood stove during the winter. The kitchen had the dining table and a wringer washer in the other corner.

After the house was moved to the farm, they built a back porch where they kept a freezer, and a bucket of water with a dipper on a buffet. After several years, they finally got running water (just cold) to the house. Never did get indoor bathroom though.

Had a metal tub hanging on a nail for winter time baths, and wash basin for “spit” baths. Summertime was showers outdoors using a watering can with sprinkler on the end.

They raised hogs, chickens, and garden produce. I used to help milk the cows, but I was very young and very slow. Still I managed to get my job done, and helped gather eggs. They often let me sleep in - early in the AM though.

Sleep - sorely lacking when the kids were growing up. We used to do all our shopping on one day- usually Christmas Eve. Once the kids were in bed asleep, we still had presents to wrap.

This year, I let my fingers do the shopping, and bought Christmas boxes that I stuffed the gifts into and taped shut, so it was done in about 30 minutes.

I too have many faded memories. I sure wish I had kept a dairy when younger, but I never expected to forget anything. LOL

Now my kids want me to write about what life was like growing up, and I’m trying, but soooooo many gaps!

The nicest thing is to have family that can come and visit I think. I’m hoping my oldest can make it home sometime. It’s been two years since I’ve seen her.

If only global warming would strike here! Then I too could be eating salad greens. LOL

Not sure, but I think even the ducks might like a respite.

Yep. I plan to. We are just home alone, and I am watching TWD marathon, but thought I’d catch up last week’s thread while I had a chance.

If insomnia continues as it has for the past few weeks, I’ll sleep in tomorrow AM, then get some work done first and then relax and post around the usual time in the afternoon.

At least that’s the plan for now.

This might not work in one of the more modern stoves. When we turn off our GE stove, it goes into cool down blower mode to empty the heat from inside.
We have a rental cabin nearby with a left sophisticated electric stove and this is where we did the prime rib.

It’s not all lettuce and violets, though. I just found a deer tick crawling on the computer screen.

Gotta give the dog her treatment, but what about me?

We still have collards and swiss chard in our frame. Its rained so much in Atlanta that our broccoli plants started to rot so I had to harvest all the crowns early and we ate them for Christmas. At this point I’m going to harvest the collards and freeze some and eat up the chard and then get my raised bed ready for the spring plant in March.

My camellia bush which usually blooms in Feb bloomed in Dec. and the blooms are almost twice as large as usual. Strange times.

You may have heard the sad news from Lake of the Ozarks. There is a summer house that has begun sliding into the lake.

My folks used to live not far from you. Up near Hurricane Deck.

The house is just off LR 5-84, now known as Bear Paw Road.
It’s in the Cub Cove Development of 15 homes.

It is believed the house was built on clay fill in the mid 1990s.
Pix are alarming...

Yeah I saw them. I pretty sure my folks lived on LR 5-52. It's been a while. Dad moved up to Butler in 1998.
