Arctic tea toss photo becomes Internet sensation

Next time you take a photo that you don’t like at first, don’t erase it; give it another chance.

Just ask Michael Davies.

The Canadian photographer based in the tiny hamlet of Pangnirtung, in Canada’s Arctic territory of Nunavut, almost deleted a picture that has now become an Internet sensation.

The photo shows Davies’s friend, Markus Siivola, throwing hot tea into the air as he bends backwards.

In the minus-40-degree weather, the hot water freezes and evaporates creating an almost magical mini-cloud.

Cool but I thought this might have something to do with the tea party. I guess it is from a certain point of view.

Nice photo. I just saved it.

Was that -40 temperature Fahrenheit or Celsius?

The two scales cross at minus 40.

-40 F equals -40 C, which is why one often sees simply "-40"

Doesn’t matter, that’s where the two lines cross.

That looks like a world-class sailing yacht.

Too bad the lady had to jump into the way at the last moment!

Of course, moments after the photo, the frozen spikes plummeted, impaling the subject to the tundra to be retrieved sometime next summer, if the polar bears don’t get him first.

We did this last year and the year before here in northern Michigan. Mostly there are videos and it was water instead of tea.

It gets colder than -40 (same F or C) in Nunavut. I have family in Grande Prairie, AB, and it gets that cold THERE. The folks in Nunavut are hearty folk. Thinsulate has the R-value without the bulk. It helps that it generally isn't windy at -40.

Oh, and they are all crazy.

Minus 40 isn’t too bad if you’re moving around. I dislike it when it’s minus 40 and windy though.
