No problem.....
just fyi ....a hub is a box that let you connect multiple (more then two) Ethernet devices together...
Think of hub like an electrical power strip... you have one electrical outlet and you need to plug in multiple devices ..so you use a power strip so to have more outlets
...techs call it a dumb hub because it has no brains its just an electrical device that lets all the Ethernet devices hear all the conversations ....
Ethernet was originally designed as a broadcast media so all the boxes were just sitting on one common wire and heard each others conversations..
Hub being dumb are the cheapest devices out there but they’re harder to find now because Switches are better in most cases to use and become near as cheap as hubs
A Switch looks like a Hub and many think its the same device because they use it for the same reason to connect multiple computers on one wire.
But a switch has some brains( smart switch vs dumb hub)...a switch listens to the computers conversations and only sends traffic out a port if it’s intended to talk to something hanging off that port....
think of it a like power strip with an on off switch on each outlet
So with a switch, a pc can not hear the conversation of the other pc on the switch unless it meant too....that great unless your trying to eavesdrop on other machines conversations and sniff/tap the wire..
so if was a phone call... a hub is the old party line where anybody on the line could pick up the phone and listening to anybody else talking on that line..... vs.... a switch that a private line
hey if you worried about computer security you need to know these things
I imagine Seymour Cray would be quite taken with the latest maxed out Mac Pro.

meh I like Norton internet security because it gives ratings to search results- Before I got NIS I was constantly clicking links to sites infected by viruses- it was maddening- Now I rarely do because I know before hand if the site is infected or not- if it has a red X I don’t even consider going to it- I realize there are other programs that do the same- but between NIS, and RollbackRX I’m good to go- anything NIS misses and causes a problem, I simply do a revert- no worries- saved my bacon a few times
By any chance, do you clear your cookies and history before you tuck your PC in for the night? If not then I suspect that it is a cookie that is waking up and sending in its report for the day.
I suggest that you use CCleaner and MRU_Blaster before you shut it down.
[[Itâs an HP. I would dump it like a cheap suit.]]
Yeah HP is kinda crap- but I’ve pretty much bare bones it- and put in hardware of my choosing- the reason I got it was for the 12 core screamer of a processor for heavy duty photo work and videos and such- overkill really- bought it a couple of years ago and the processor is still considered one of the faster ones on the market today- The PSU is crap- the vid card not very current now, but the processor will be good to go for many more years IF it holds up of course
[[techs call it a dumb hub because it has no brains]]
huh, that’s what my old girlfriends called me
[[hey if you worried about computer security you need to know these things]]
I’m not too worried- My setup with rollbackRX and security software takes care of most of the virus malware issues- and I also have a current physical backup with a disk duplicator that I raw copied this hard drive over to a new disk for when/if something happens to this one- I’ve tested it and it’s ready to go (Which will save me tons of work as I have lots and lots of tweaks, workarounds, programs settings set to my liking etc-
The networkining stuff is what confuses me and not something I want to get into as I’ve read that maintaining networks can be a BIT of a nightmare when someone like me doesn’t really know that we’re doing- it’s just another level of complication I don’t really want to get into
[[By any chance, do you clear your cookies and history before you tuck your PC in for the night? If not then I suspect that it is a cookie that is waking up and sending in its report for the day.]]
No- I used to run cookie wall by analogueX which was great at preventing cookies from remaining on computer, and an easy place to see them all and delete new ones etc- I should reinstall that-
oh ok I thought it would boot into Linux if needed too-

[[No. I can see it in the device manager and it gives me this: ST380011 A USB device. The properties drop down says itâs working ok but no drive letter.]]
There’s a step you have to take to set a volume or something on it, or maybe a partition- I just had to go through this a few months back- Later tonight I’ll look it up for you- ping me so I will know to do so when I get back- but ocne you have the volume or whatever set- it assigns a letter to the hard-drive-
Try this page for now
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/tipstricks/f/partition-hard-drive.htm
Basically the steps are
1: click start button
2: type partititons
3: You should see it listed there as ‘disk 1 or osemthing- hovering mouse over it should say ‘unallocated’ you need to set a volume on it- New Simple Volume which you’ll see when you right click
Follow isntrucitosn from #6 on- print htem out so you have them on desk to read while doing all this
I did ask him about it and instead he prescribed 2 sleeping pills along with 4 exlax- told me I’d sleep like a baby
Whoo Hoo! That worked. It’s now formatting! Wait’ll I tell my bro - didn’t think his little sis could do it. Hah! Thankee thankee thankee. L/Janey
you’re welcome- My memory is not good as I had just done this process myself not long ago- did it say ‘disk 1’ down in the bottom row? or ‘disk 0’? The confusing part was going through the wizard when setting the volume- but I guess I did everything right because it worked on my hard-drive- I was able to duplicate my main drive over to it with a disk duplicator, and it works fine-
Glad it worked for you-
Two windows opened up; one for the main drive and the second for the USB drive. I clicked on the box then right clicked it and it came up with the formatting information. It’s now doing the long format routine. Thanks again!
the remote access ‘may have’ solved the issue- I had the computer in sleep modfe for a coupel of hours, had someone listen for the hard-drive to spin and watch for lights to light up and they said it didn’t- I’ll have the computer in sleep for a few hours tonight before I get back on, so I’ll know better then if it does it or not-
from menu bar hit view or window for network monitor ( forget which-on phone now) That gets you to network activity- use help for details and how to save logs. That gives you a picture from which to look at other stuff. Have a happy New Year!
Norton users have this running in task scheduler every 30 minutes and it's set to wake-up the computer, it's used to check for Windows 10 migration and to immediately download the 10 version of it's antimalware so as to not leave the user exposed.
If you have no intention of upgrading to 10 you can remove it, read this forum post, there is a tool linked in the thread that will remove it.
Norton Security Suite Upgrade - New Remediation Task Wakes Computer
I had the wake-up ghost and the tool worked.
Thanks for that tip- I hadn’t even a clue that could track down the issue-
says usb\root_hub\ then some figures after that
Looks like usb is causing the issue - could it be the new printer causing it as the printer is usb?
Just the tower wakes up briefly- monitor is still in sleep mode- it lasts about 5 minutes, then tower shuts down again
I guess what I’m gonna have to do is do a revert to before I installed the printer, unplug it, and see if it continues-
The usb\root_hub seems to be related to mouse or keyboard though, but what I don’t understand is that nothing changed on my computer except the install of the printer- I hadn’t done any updates lately, no program installs other than printer- (I’ve gone through it making sure it’s not set to wake computer) and this just started occurring recently-
Do you think it could be a faulty usb socket going bad?
Anyway thanks for the advice to track down what it is- seems others are having same issue online- I’ll see if I can find solution
They suggest turning off keyboard and mouse wake options- but then how do I get computer out of sleep mode? And like I said - it was never an issue before, why now all of a sudden? Makes me think perhaps something is going bad- Mouse is newish, about 6 months old, keyboard is a few years old- botrh still plugged into the same usb ports- that hasn’t changed-
Uggggh! I hate computers lol
