As a doctor who treats concussions and a lifelong fan, I now believe pro football is unethical

So doctor think it is unethical.

So frigging what? So many more people do not.

They get well paid. They know the risks. To say that future head and body injuries might manifest after being knocked hard 10-15 years, plus taking roids, could cause a lot of problems later, and they never thought it possible,or probable, is nuts. Its like saying boxers had no clue getting puncedmin the head for years could mess them up big time.

It is assinine. Just a way to bilk more money playing innocent victim, and pad lawyers pockets.

I guess we will just be left with something called pussyball.

All the uniforms will be heavily padded pink vaginas and will restrict player movement to less than 2 miles an hour. Everytime you approach another teams player you have to give a sticky hug.

One huge factor no one talks about is the many teams who play on artificial turf.

I have walked onto a couple turf “fields”. Both times it was summer and those fields were HOT!
The best I can describe it is a concrete slab with a indoor-outdoor carpet on top.

I know that artificial turf was blamed for some concussions back in the 80’s or 90’s for about a month but it was dropped pretty quickly.

Most doctors place no value on freedom, seeing themselves as part of the ruling class. They think they're minor deities whose logic is far above that of the people they lock out of their infinitely corrupt rent seeking cartel.

If a doctor tells you something is unethical just remember, their profession is the biggest lobby for partial birth abortion and euthanasia.

I think you are being overly dramatic. Some of these football players are definitely not gladiators, if you are using the romanticized version of the term, if that is possible; they are thugs. I don’t watch football much anymore. Even high school football is becoming degenerate; unsportsmanlike conduct is prevalent.

I never watched football just to see vicious hits.

Couple years ago Rush said the left would be making a push against football.

Anything American, anything masculine must go.

Safe spaces for pansies are in.

But we will survive. When ISIS or their likes murderously populate our country, we can have comfort in knowing our gun free zones and safe spaces will protect us. And if if we are not in one of those, then just call a time out, maybe shed some tears.

How come no one talks about automobile racing? People DIE every year racing cars. Spectators occasionally also. Seems a bit more serious then concussions. But there is no talk of the immortality of racing.

“There is no question. Football players are gladiators.”

Personally, not so sure of that. I guess it depends on how you’d define ‘gladiator’.

I’ve lost interest in football over the years precisely because it doesn’t seem to be about athletics anymore, and IMHO a fair number of any pro squad are physically unhealthy (e.g. huge linemen with a large amount of central body fat - in addition to the muscle of course). IMHO a fair number would have a hard time performing well in something demanding along the lines of special ops training. They are clearly elites in their sport, and in their specialty positions, but they are not all representative of being a superb overall athlete in great physical condition.

I used to love football, primarily because of the athleticism. At this point, I think they need to clamp down dramatically on performance enhancing drug use, define a maximum percentage body fat you can have and stay on a roster, and somehow change the rules such that using your helmeted head in play is not seen (well beyond the spearing rules etc.). Make the game more about speed, quickness, athleticism, and technical finesse than about clobbering someone.

Get rid of the helmets. And teach people how to tackle. Rugby players know how to tackle. All the helmet does is make people think its a weapon

********

Great point. I played football in HS and Rugby in college. My experience is that Rugby players get hurt more often with bumps and bruises, etc, but at a lower level of injury. Football players get hurt less often, but at a higher level of devastation due to the equipment and due to the blocking piles.

I’m a big believer in letting people do what they want as well, but football is becoming more and more dangerous and kids are practically brainwashed into playing it at very young ages. It’s a difficult thing to watch two of my friends who both played Big10 football and who are close to 50 now. Post Concussion problems and knee/hip replacements are the norm or as their bodies have been falling apart.

Add in the corruption of big time college football (and HS ball for that matter) and you have to wonder when and if the tide will turn against the sport.

Football may damage the brain but the cliches in this hack piece are far more dangerous to the grey matter.

They should play with same equipment as Rugby players.

Welcome to a world of liberal sissies.

It’s not enough to choose personally not to play football; we have to stop others from playing. [Note: I chose not to let my kids play football, but that was my right as a parent - I took them to the range instead and taught them to shoot well.]

It’s not enough to choose personally not to let our kids walk a half mile on their own; we have to call Child Protective Services on others. It’s not enough to choose personally to play along with a gay “wedding”; we have to compel others to play make-believe with us.

Liberalism is disgusting.

Personally, I think 50 years from now, the Big Three of professional sports in the USA will be:

1. Baseball
2. Basketball
3. Soccer

Baseball will have an April to October season, basketball will have a November to May season, and soccer will have a split August-early December and February-May season (similar to continental European soccer leagues). All those American football fields used by the NFL nowadays will eventually be converted to FIFA-standard soccer pitches.

The retired football players I have met seemed quite fine to me, but maybe the ones who are not quite so fine don't go out as much.

I think one of the major problems has been the emphasis on scoring which has changed the game from primarily running to primarily passing. Rule changes have encouraged this. So offensive holding used to be 15 yards from where it occurred to now it is 10 yards from the line of scrimmage, which is probably where the play might have ended without the holding but the offense gets an extra down. Intentional grounding has essentially been legalized. Rules for offensive holding, which gives a QB more time to throw, have been weakened considerably.

Think about the plays where you see someone carted off the field on a stretcher. They are almost always pass plays.

Unless you’re watching English Premier League. NBC Sports has a surprising ratings winner with the Premier League, mostly because there is no language barrier necessary to overcome to enjoy this league.

The last region in this country to give up football will be the South. On the flip side, maybe this will piss them off enough to enact a divorce from a country that continues to slide into limp-wristed communism.
