I believe I've read that there is something magical about a 42% threshold in an election/poll. Can someone clarify why that number is so important? Does or have to do with inevitability?

It can be shown mathematically that control of a fragmented market (with multiple participants) is at 41.7% or rounded up to 42%.
This works in marketing of products and in politics, where a political party sells a product called "candidate."

“It can be shown mathematically that control of a fragmented market (with multiple participants) is at 41.7% or rounded up to 42%.”
So in other words, if you’re over 41.7% with a plurality, you pretty much win.
Thank you. Makes sense now. :-)

In Japan, the LDP maintained control for many years with 42% or more of the Lower House (total of 475 seats) either directly or with cooperation of minor groups.

Not only that...But the Japanese used the same approach to:
1. Take away photocopiers from the inventors Rank Zerox company
2 Take away motorcycles from the British
3. Take away cameras from the Germans
4. Fuji demolished Kodak in films
5. And cars from everyone else.

Regarding Trump, he has superior fighting skills in terms of negotiating and handling the opposition, see any video of how he handles disruptors at rally...the best example was when he demolished Ramos of LaRaza and Telemondo

Notice that Trump has no Teleprompter or even notes on the lectern.

Notice that Trump has no Teleprompter or even notes on the lectern. He's developing a new style in public speaking known as blurting. The speaker stands at the lectern like a lepidopterist swishing a net above his head until he snares an idea about which to blurt. Use the words, beautiful and nice, frequently as fillers. Rinse...repeat....
