A 14-year-old girl wounded in a deadly shooting spree in Michigan this weekend was initially pronounced brain dead at the hospital before she squeezed her mother's hand and was rushed to surgery, her family told authorities.
She is now in critical condition and "fighting for her life," her family said.
The teen, who was shot in a Kalamazoo Cracker Barrel parking lot Saturday, was pronounced brain dead shortly after arriving at Bronson Methodist Hospital, Michigan State Police Lt. Dale Hinz told ABC News today.
Her family told the lieutenant that an hour or two later, the hospital was in the process of preparing her organs for donation when the girl squeezed her mother's hand, he said.

It’s stories like these that make me question if I should have the “organ donor” endorsement on my DL. So many stories about going to harvest on a person who could make a full recovery.
Makes me think of Bernie Sanders. KZoo is Ann Arbor’s liberal baby sister.
Every single one of my liberal family members over there works for one of the colleges or for the city.
Well, you gotta pay for the illegals and every-boo-boo = ER visit SOMEHOW.
Fact, I think I’ll change my designation. Anything happens, stick a fork in me and toss me to the medical school; maybe I’ll be helpful for a few good laughs at the worst.
If I can’t sell my own, or until the transplant side of things comes down to a charity situation, I’ll not be part of the game. The recipient will have a life-long $$ worry to begin (foreign tissue and all) w/out the massive tack-on from the get-go.
Just in recently in Texas. This man literally saved his son’s life. Shame nobody values life anymore, just the almighty dollar.

A friend of mine, now a vet widow, had a lot of problems finding a place that would keep her husband on life-support. Area included Philly and So. Jersey.
Some places are now inducing a deep coma to help the brain heal...

But ... I have a question about this whole incident:
With the anti-gun fervor in the federal administration these days, why was this story TOTALLY dark for the most part in the national/world press, or from the lips our current president?
Any ideas out there?? ... other than the individuals in the press and administration are waiting to pounce on the Uber IPO??
My daughter, a registered nurse, told me to never never never sign an organ donor card. If they have an organ donor card for you, they will not try to save you.
I am not an organ donor but be prepared that instead of opting “in” soon we’ll be automatic organ donors and you’ll have to specifically opt out.
I would LOVE to see the evidence that she was “pronounced brain dead”. Who signed the Death Certificate?
I would never want to be a parent put into that position as to have to make such a decision.....
Back in 2001 my step-father had to decide after my half brother was pronounced brain dead as a result of an auto accident and lay in a coma for a week.......
It was some solace that his heart was immediately donated to a young person awaiting a heart transplant...........

You can be pronounced ‘brain dead’ without a Death Certificate. ‘Brain Dead’ just means no brain activity
You are not officially ‘dead’ until your heart stops beating. And that normally happens with a ‘brain dead’ patient when you stop all life support. With no brain activity, nothing tells the heart to beat or the lungs to breathe.
Then you’re officially dead.
A friend’s pregnant daughter, who had had a stroke, was declared dead in the ER. Her gurney was pushed away into a corner. Friend begged for a resuscitation attempt, or effort to try to save the baby, to no avail. Then friend said in her daughter’s ear that she had to squeeze her finger, or both she and her baby would be allowed to die. Firm squeeze for Mom, and another firm squeeze for a disbelieving nurse. The daughter and baby survived. Baby is now a mother of two.
Families should remember the hearing is last to go, and that it’s necessary to be vigilant and assertive.
My Dad was writing a book on a Monday, had a heart attack on Tues. and was put in intensive care where nurses had standard orders to administer a great range of medication, without additional Dr. approval. He was so loopy from the med that he was declared demented on Wednesday. Yes, we became assertive.
