Cool. my personal preference if it’s absolutely necessary to have windows, is to run it in a box as a VM running under Linux.

Well it is a real happening...see this from Anantech:

Microsoft Build 2016 Keynote Live Blog

*****************************************EXCERPT******************************

12:15PM EDT - showed off editing code in emacs

12:15PM EDT - bash brings the power of open source command line tools to Windows

12:13PM EDT - Bash should help devs who rely on open source frameworks

12:12PM EDT - Android bridge was also a subsystem even though it's dead now

12:12PM EDT - this is a subsystem, not the first to be added to WIndows

12:11PM EDT - native Ubuntu binaries running on Windows

12:11PM EDT - Bash Shell is coming to Windows

12:11PM EDT - devs struggle using WIndows as the home dev box

12:11PM EDT - Now moving on to hosted web apps

I use ubuntu and I like the unity interface, even though it’s got some critics.

“OK, dumb question here, if I switch to LINUX do my drivers still work? Do I have to spend weeks getting everything to mesh?”

Not a dumb question. I think the answer is “maybe”. It’s more likely to be a problem with cutting-edge hardware of some sorts, i.e. the sorts that are marketed to the lowest common denominator.

You could use a live CD of a Linux distribution to see if you’d run into any driver problems with your system.

Windows 10 and Linux living together? Cats and dogs too... PING!

You can find all the Windows Ping list threads with FR search: just search on keyword "windowspinglist".

Thanks to ShadowAce for the ping!!

All printers pretty much are. I despise printers in just about every conceivable way.

90% of the problems I get called about in my facility are printer related. I’ve told my users that I’m for putting mini-Gutenberg presses on people’s desks and importing monks, scribes, and calligraphers and yanking all printers. Most think it’s funny. A few probably think I would if I could.

I tried years ago with Knoppix live and SuSE when her windoze box crashed.

That went nowhere.

I have Ubuntu as a second OS and toying with Mint on an older Lenovo laptop some.

Ha! When I say “threatened” it was more like a 3 year conditioning exercise. She knew it was coming and there was but one program that she wouldn’t let go of WinXP for. But...It all worked.

I believe so. I last used Mint at v8.0 and it wasn’t quite ready for Primetime.

This is basically, Ubuntu user-space packages running natively on Windows 10 by Microsoft coming up with real-time translation of Linux system calls into Windows system calls.

I would have filed that under "Impossible tasks."
