Narcissistic personality disorder
Wikipedia ^

Posted on 04/04/2016 8:36:42 PM PDT by UnwashedPeasant

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a personality disorder in which a person is excessively preoccupied with personal adequacy, power, prestige and vanity, mentally unable to see the destructive damage they are causing to themselves and often others.

People with narcissistic personality disorder are characterized by exaggerated feelings of self-importance. They have a sense of entitlement and demonstrate grandiosity in their beliefs and behavior. They have a strong need for admiration, but lack feelings of empathy.

In addition to these symptoms, the person may display arrogance, show superiority, and seek power. The symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder can be similar to the traits of individuals with strong self-esteem and confidence; differentiation occurs when the underlying psychological structures of these traits are considered pathological. Narcissists have such an elevated sense of self-worth that they value themselves as inherently better than others, when in reality they have a fragile self-esteem, cannot handle criticism, and often try to compensate for this inner fragility by belittling or disparaging others in an attempt to validate their own self-worth. Comments and criticisms about others are vicious from sufferers of NPD, in an attempt to boost their own poor self-esteem.

Another narcissist symptom is a lack of empathy. They are unable to relate, understand, and rationalize the feelings of others. Instead of behaving in a way that shows how they are feeling in the moment, they behave in the way that they feel they are expected to behave or that gives them the most attention.

You are absolutely correct. The words that an article like this use to describe narcissism are completely inadequate. They can’t express:
1) the damage that a narcissist does to those around them,
2) nor the protective networks of weak personalities they surround themselves with (e.g. as spies or enforcers),
3) nor their capacity to completely fool people who only deal with them from a distance.

Trump is definitely NOT a narcissist. Closer would be Obama.

The best way to describe narcissism is to recall the mythic and instructive tale of Narcissus. Narcissus grew to be so fascinated by his own appearance, his beauty and grace, that he could not view the world around him and grew misshapen. He was not unable to separate what was important to him from what may have been about him, but important to someone else, for instance. it was not something he could relate to, because it was not focused solely on him, which is where the center of his world lay. And you are right, I think, that the real number of population of co-morbid or “close but no cigar” narcissists is MUCH higher than a few percent. But the 1% number is probably good for the pure, pathological NPD.

That particular set of apparent symptoms is co-morbid, present along with many other disorders and is therefore often misdiagnosed. Many Alcoholics are narcissistic; some professionals in the field (it is especially heartbreaking in addictions) have a difficult time separating them. A dual diagnosis patient is monstrously hard to treat, especially with a borderline personality disorder, which I think is what people are detecting with Mr. Cruz. It is not an awful thing, but quite stubborn, especially if it is seemingly successful. It can sometimes be useful too; many therapists share that particular set of affects.

One of the most successful treatments for psychological disorders in history is AA. One of the fascinating things about it is the concept of “ego deflation at depth” for the addict to be able to see what is happening around him. Unfortunately for many, the underlying NPD or borderline disorder, will reclaim them eventually, in respect to the addiction, if undiagnosed and treated. Which, believe it or not, is in fact possible, with qualified results.

At any rate, there are high functioning borderline personalities and other disorders that can often be so closely engaged that separating and treating them is almost more an art form than a psychological process. I understand the feelings that NPD can produce, but I don’t share the “just scrape the off” attitude towards them that many therapists share.

There is a lot of help that can be offered. Many of the high functioning borderline and ND personalities can become big celebrities and politicians, successful entrepreneurs and musicians. Primarily, solo endeavors that have them at the center of their little universe with everything revolving around them. They are a specialty treatment group to be sure.

There is no doubt about pathology with many politicians and you are correct, they are debate stoppers. Ironically, the very people that will feed off this attention, negative or not, are the stand out NPD like Hillary (”What difference, now, does it make?”) Clinton. Se really did not understand what difference it made and produced one of her famous outbursts, because it was the threat to her narcissistic core that compelled her to stage the outburst to deflect criticism.

She is so ruthless, she may be one of the most clinically deranged (impossible to tell what that particular stew of symptoms might be concealing) and dangerous politicians we have seen in recent history. God help us if we get saddled with her.

“Trump is definitely NOT a narcissist. Closer would be Obama.”

I don’t agree with Obama, he is calculating in his actions and has tremendous focus. Pathologically speaking, they should publish any DSM with a picture of Hilary at the top. Remember how desperately angry and pitifully cried out “what difference, now, does it make?”

Boom. There it was. Her ego could not withstand the narcissistic blow that colossal screw up produced. Think of the anguish, anger and touch of accusation in her voice. It wasn’t her feeling of empathy or sorrow or regret or feeling for the victims.

It was all for her. Her in the WH produces REAL chills down my spine. And it takes a lot to put any there.

Based on the number of narcissists I know/have known, I’d say the percentage is much higher than 1%. Probably a high % of politicians are narcissists, especially the Dems.

I agree with you about Hillary but I believe that tossing around the term malignant narcissist really does nothing best to attack her where her criminal behavior shows. we don't have use the term narcissist all we have to do is point out her destructive behavior. I personally believe that Hillary is on the verge of losing it publicly. when she self destruct it will be like OJ Simpson's Bronco chase or David Koresh’s fire at his compound . she will end up taking most her parties leadership with her damaging there careers. I believe that those high up in the democratic party all ready know this and it is fear from blackmail that keeps the party from putting an end to her run.

NO comparable stories exist about Soetoro. NO friends exist—only political associates.

I was thinking about this very thing when I heard the Jim Herman story yesterday, after seeing Melissa Young [Miss Wisconsin 2005] talking to Donald Trump at a rally in Wisconsin.

I've only worked for ONE boss in my life that is similar to Trump - and the man is still my friend, all these years later.

If he asked me to do something for him, I'd drop everything, and be on it for him. But of course he wouldn't ask...

That's right. Certainly according to the Freudian definition. I'm no expert, but it seems to me that the term has come to be confused with "egomania", which is a different thing. Narcissism is passive and self-absorbed, in accordance with the defining myth wherein Narcissus is captivated by his own image. Freud gives the examples of a tiger, or a beautiful woman, each of whom is self-satisfied, and unmindful of their surroundings. ( In the second of these, we may think of that scene from ANIMAL HOUSE. )

Perhaps, but more than 1% of the general population are preoccupied with who they think is or is not a narcissist.
