OWIE, Texas — Word spreads quickly around in the City of Bowie, Population: 5,000.

So when a large statue covered with blue tarp showed up off of Highway 81, just about everyone in the city already knew what was underneath it.

"I think it will put Bowie on the map," said local Bill Enlow. "I hope it does."

People driving by noticed the crowds surrounding the statue Thursday afternoon, and they also heard the applause after the Montague County city unveiled what will be its new landmark.

Oh, the Bowie Knife, NOT David Bowie. I hope that sculpture is very firmly fixed to the ground, because I can see lots of kids and idle adults making a sport of trying to pull that knife handle down. Good idea though, and it invites us to learn about local history.

that is pretty neat.

Since I am related distantly to Jim Bowie, it means something to me.

Fine knife. I have a Ka-Bar, which incorporates some Bowie knife features, though on a smaller scale: blade length, 7”.

If it’s a true Bowie, it has to have a clip-edge, which I thought were illegal.

Believe it or not, Bowie knives are illegal in Texas.
