Mistakes are easy to make. That’s why we had months and years of backups. Just in case.
And still, things happen. And they happen so fast you can’t believe it.
And there used to be technical issues that might catch you. Unintended consequences. Most web hosts run dual servers (at least mine does). You NEVER repeat action on one until you’re certain the first one is OK.
Actually if its a physical server, all the data is still on the disk, and can be recovered.. if however he’s just a front for virtualized machines, good luck finding the right drive that actually had the information.
Recovering “deleted” files is a rather mundane thing to do on an actual physical drive....
Try this and see if you can recreate what he did.......
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DELTREE
DELTREE was not shipped in Windows NT-based operating systems, including Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8. Instead, the RD or RMDIR (remove directory) command removes a subdirectory along with all its files if the /S command-line switch is given, and does so without prompting if the /Q command-line switch is given as well.
We still use tapes.
Hope they’re shielded. They probably are.
There was a guy with a floor waxer that took out some backups because they reels were next to the floor. The magnetic field of the floor waxer damaged the tapes’ content.
Old, old story.
Plus he put / which meant “start at the root”.
This is a Carbonite commercial in the making....
Dammit I was about to post the tale of Bobby Tables....
FORMAT /F /U
The ultimate FU command...
There were countless times where I would clean out TMP and other "junk" on big systems... it's always nerve-wracking waiting for the command prompt to return so I could reassure myself that everything else is still there.
I used to remotely maintain systems in Europe, Argentina, Australia, Mexico City, etc... and doing these things remotely is very scary... one screw up and they're down for days til I can get there and recover things. Never went bad though... thankfully.
Even if a usable system backup was available, these days even five minutes of downtime is not tolerated.
That one little command has cost many a system administrator his job.
Hillary wants to know how to use that Unix command.

So if I type rm -FR/ I might accidentally delete FreeRepublic? I better not try it.
Why would he loose the data if he was working FOR them? Wouldn’t releasing the data only help the republicans and anyone else who did not agree with their agendas?
Format C:? (yes or no)
Yep.
Back in college, before everyone had their own computer, we had a community computer. My roommate at the time, after he had backed up his data, did the old “del *.*” on the PC, thinking he was in his directory. But he was at the top of the drive, and deleted everything.
Well, everyone who did not back up their work was livid. And he did not defuse the situation when he replied, “You should have backed up your data.”
He went on to make a small fortune working for Oracle and a few other software companies...
Guy wrote a script or was using one that depeneded on variables and those variables were blank (maybe environment ones or something). But problem is that by them being blank it ended up with delete recursively from the root. Unfortunately he had software that propagated script to his backups... Doh.
LOL!
