The Kelpie was owned by Victoria dairy farmer Brian McLaren.

He told a local newspaper that she died on Sunday night in her basket.

"She was 30. She was still going along nicely last week. She was walking from the dairy to the office and growling at the cats and all that sort of thing," Brian told the Weekly Times.

Its because they are not people but yet still non-human family.

A show I watch had a character who on a tangent, nailed it.

My dog isnt especially pretty or smart,,and hes old now. But I love him anyway. I learned a lot about what it is to love another. I take care of my dog, and in his way, he takes care of me. And I learned, when you take care of something, you begin to love it.

Sure is. Lost my 15 year old good boy two weeks ago and I still feel empty and terrible.

This is a curious thing and something I have often pondered. It is a thing which has vexed me personally.

I think I understand a little about this. My father died last year at age 92. He had a great productive life and he was sorely missed by everyone when he passed. People understand that we are on this earth for a limited time and if you manage to live a full, long life, it's a wonderful thing.

Earlier this year, we lost or little rescue Jack Russell Poodle mix. Every day that goes by I still feel a huge hole in my heart and we think about her every day. To her, we were gods who provided food, comfort and love and she responded with unlimited love and devotion. I'm sure she didn't understand why she was sick and blind and deaf and we weren't able to make her feel like a puppy again. She didn't understand, like people understand, that our time is limited and there's nothing we can do about it.

At least that's my current take on this.

It’s newsworthy to at least some of the folks here.

Very sorry for your loss.

We picked up a Black-mouthed cur at the shelter nearly 3 years ago - she was a very cute pup, and we thought that she was a mutt (I found out otherwise just a few weeks back - and it makes no difference).

My wife only grudgingly allowed her, having promised my daughter a dog if she did well enough on a test.* But now, the dog sleeps in our bed, and sometimes I think that she cares more about the dog than me. I know that when she finally passes away, we will all cry like we lost a family member...because we will have lost exactly that. No matter what, she’s there for us and glad to see any or all of us at any time.

I hope that you can be comforted by your memories of your pet/family member.

*My wife suffered from the handicap of not knowing very much about how challenges like that get answered. I was a junior in high school, and my father made me take an SAT 3 days later, when I hadn’t studied at all (I was planning to take one about 2 months later). Nonetheless, I did pretty well (I always did on standardized tests). My father, thinking that he’d get me to improve a lot, said that if I went up 150 points, he’d get me the Atari 2600 game system (for those too young to know, it was the hottest system of the day, circa 1978). Well, I went up EXACTLY 150 points. Similarly, my daughter passed by JUST enough to get the dog. :>) We are all very glad that she did.

Also, if you will looky-look up, way up, up in the far upper right corner of the page...see up there? There, where it says, "General/Chat"? I think you owe gorush an apology...

News to the mainstream media? Yes, of course. My apologies. I forgot to consider what was really important. What an idiot I am.

Had to put down our 17 YO lab last month. Sad, but she was a ghost of her former self. The 2 YO lab didn’t care at all.

it’s nice for people to say aww, old dogs should be given time to drop dead. In practice, its tough when they get incontinent and have a hard time getting up and out.

For what its worth, I wouldn’t want myself treated any differently if I get like that @ decades close to ~120.
