When Donald Trump’s political credentials as a Republican and/or conservative are challenged, he likes to remind people that Ronald Reagan was a Democrat once and managed to evolve over time. Except that Reagan’s conversion was real and he had two terms as governor of California to prove his bona fides before he ran for president as a conservative Republican. As Reagan campaign manager Stu Spencer and speechwriter Ken Khachiagin note in a Real Clear Politics piece:
Yes, Ronald Reagan migrated from being a liberal Democrat to the gold standard for conservative Republicans. But Reagan’s views evolved over four decades’ worth of life experience, a philosophical journey that took place gradually. And then back to Republican again, I think it was 2007/2008.
In 2009 he registered as Republican, then he registered to Independent. Then he registered as Republican in March 2012, so he could vote for Romney in the 2012 primary, although he didn’t actually voted in that primary. This year’s New York primary was the first primary he has ever voted in.
True, if he’s comparable to anyone, it’s fellow NY billionaire and republican-when-convenient, liberal in (thin) disguise Michael Bloomberg.
So what? And no, he registered Republican to vote against Hillary in 2008.

Reagan was as conservative as the dynamic of a Tip O’Neill House and a marginally GOP Senate would let him be. The fact he was able to enact those early tax cuts and military spending hikes against a hostile Congress is a near-miracle.

They (Ted & Amanda) met twice a week at a hotel, taking a room and then leaving after a couple or three hours. Marco Rubio hired detectives to follow them and take photos. Then when the Rubio group wouldn’t pay up the total bill, the PIs shopped the photos around and NE bought the lot.
