So you love the city, yet you’re OK with it having no go zones. I could throw the same thing about responsibility at you, I thought we’d made headway in that department, for a few brief decades there we knew that accepting the existence of bad neighborhoods was bad. I’m not saying you should go into them, just that you should fight against them, not just keep your map up to date.

It’s best to not accept them. They don’t HAVE to exist. We CAN clean them up. We have in the past.

We’ve managed to get rid of bad neighborhoods before. It takes effort.

The only effort it takes is pushing folks into a different bad neighborhood so the developers can move in and make money. Or pushing them into what was once a decent neighborhood, making it bad. Plop a public housing project in the middle of a neighborhood is the fastest way to migrate people.

I’ve walked around Algiers many times admiring the architecture. And the Garden District although I prefer the more modest structures of Algiers. I’m not sure where Storeyville is or was - I’ll have to check that out. That’s where the great Louie Armstrong came from. I’ve done many tours of NO - because of my love of the plays of Tennessee Williams who first drew me to that beautiful city.

Texas and Louisiana seems to have many connections; makes sense, given the geography.

No. When New York cleaned itself up they didn’t push them into other neighborhoods and drag those down. They stopped accepting the behavior across the board. Lawlessness exists where lawlessness is tolerated. Start going after the petty crimes and the big crimes go away.

I’m not ok with no go zones. Quite the opposite. But I do wonder what a young man, leaving his young fiancé back in a hotel, was doing at 4 in the morning in an inner city. Yes, I admit it, I think he was there for drugs. Like that is so impossible!

Guiliani did push the homeless out of the city. He pushed them out of the state!

One way ticket to “get the hell out of my town” was a tried and true solution to many societal problems for millennia.

As for what he was doing out at 4AM I still say it doesn’t matter. In my youth I’d stay up all night just to stay up all night, and that often entailed heading out in the pre-dawn hours when the world is quiet and pretty just to walk around and soak it in. The energy of youth lets you do that kind of stuff just because.

Oh, bull. You’ve stuck your head into the sand over this. Luckily, for you, the mainstream media will rally to you and present him as a perfect fellow who at the convenience store was just trying to bring fresh flowers to his sleepy-head fiancé after an evening at midnight Mass. Maybe he was but my hunch is he wasn’t.

No oh bull about it. People DO stay up all night without having to be involved in anything nefarious. And heck, half the women in my family get up at 4AM (which I consider a sickness). It’s not some magic evil hour that only has bad people in it. Funny how much work you’re putting into making sure everybody thinks he brought it on himself. According to you not only was he stupid for being in a bad part of town, he was clearly buying drugs and cheating on his fiance. Talk about sticking your head in the sand, maybe you should send a medal to his killer for removing this obvious vile person from the gene pool.

Nope. Not buying. I never said he was cheating on his fiancé, btw. Never occurred to me. But as a resident of Ocean Grove who was often stopped in Asbury Park while driving while white (yes, it does happen!), white people in black neighborhoods are often trying to buy drugs and cops will stop you to inquire your reasons for being in a black neighborhood. The first time it happened (I was wasting time before going to work at the radio station I worked in), I was astonished. I then learned to be late for work!

When New York cleaned itself up they didn’t push them into other neighborhoods and drag those down.

"Citywide Crime is Down but Shootings in Harlem Are Up" (2015) https://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20150702/central-harlem/city-wide-crime-is-down-but-shootings-harlem-are-up

"Violent Crime Fell? Tell It to East Harlem" (2013) http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/06/nyregion/violent-crime-fell-tell-it-to-east-harlem.html

And have fun with this and see if you really, truly, would walk through ANY NYC neighborhood at 2 am on a Sunday morning. It's really fairly easy to see where the criminals have been pushed - and where they tend to avoid. https://maps.nyc.gov/crime/

Of course you’re not buying it, you’ve become vested in blaming him, you’ve accused him of everything under the sun, base entirely on him being awake at 4AM.

That’s the modern era where we don’t care and let neighborhoods rot. Now look up the stats from the Broken Windows era when crime dropped across the ENTIRE city.

You might take a look at my post 153. Guiliani didn’t push crime out of town, he pushed it off the front page to areas where the tourists and decent folks wouldn’t have to experience it or read about it. Because who really cares about what one gangsta does to another gangsta.

No, actually you accused him of cheating on his fiancé, something I never even considered - if you read what I said initially, I thought he was out on a bachelor party.

And, no I didn’t accuse him of beating a dog, raping a woman, cheating on his girl or stealing a wallet. That he may have been buying drugs in a black neighborhood is entirely possible or untrue. But driving while white in a black neighborhood is one of the secrets of law enforcement. Try finding it on google. Having been stopped after dark in a black neighborhood, that’s what set me on alert as well as knowledge of white people cruising for drugs. Sadly, his family will never know.

Nope. Sorry, I lived in NYC during Giuliani’s administration and of course he sent them out of town. On buses. We all knew it and none of us cared a damn. That’s what they do; when I owned in Ocean Grove, we took in the homeless crazies that were put out of richer towns. The town got state money for doing so.

Oh we saw all those and heard live jazz during the day. Ate beignet. We did take one evening ghostwalk tour. Loved the gas sconces. Stay with a guided tour after dark. In the FQ only, of course.

Oh and try a Pimms cup.
