A bison calf that tourists loaded into their vehicle at Yellowstone National Park because they were concerned for its welfare could not be reunited with its herd and had to be euthanized, park officials said Monday as they reasserted the importance of avoiding wildlife

Even is someone wanted it, they couldn’t ship it out of the park because it might have brucellosis.

They could have waited until it weighed 1,000 pounds and reintroduced it.

Very insensitive....

I read that the calf could be treated for it, but the park couldn’t afford to treat it. That’s why they couldn’t do that, unless somebody had offered to pay for that treatment.

Have you ever been to Yellowstone ? Mother Nature is beautiful but brutal.

Very well stated.

Yellowstone is a National Park, not a ranch or farm or zoo. People are warned to stay away from the animals, they are wild animals.

The park rangers are very well aware of this but unfortunately the liberal tourists are not.

How many rangers do you know? I’ve worked with the NPS more than once, there are some turds like in every punch bowl, but by and large they are good people, and a few are among the finest people I’ve ever known.

From what I’ve read, they would have had to quarantine if for a couple of months and they don’t have the facilities to do that at the park.

I once found a tiny kitten that had been rejected by its mother. I carried him home in the palm of my hand. When we took him to the vet for his first checkup, the doctor said he wasn’t even going to vaccinate him because he wouldn’t live. Bad heart. He made it to about 10 months, then vapor locked and keeled over.

I am sure they could have held an internet fund raiser, money would have poured in.

"I’m wondering if there isn’t more to this story."

It sounded strange to me right from the beginning. During spring migrations to high country, I've seen young calves moved in trailers that had no trouble being welcomed back by their mothers. I can't imagine a buffalo being so different that it needed killing.

There is.

Brucellosis quarantine.

Per local Sioux Falls newspaper.

Could not afford to do the long quarantine to prevent spread risk.

Also, noted as foreigners who helped.

Just came across this —it’s not directly related to this particular article, but it’s about bisons:

We used to put the cow in a stanchion, put some hobbles on her, and put four calves on her. She didn’t like it but could do nothing about it. We fed them twice a day that way.

Worked great till the scours hit.

Too much chance of brucellosis spreading to cattle. The Yellowstone herds are infected with it.

A CNN piece on the story said they were “international” tourists. It said the park was going to start putting up warning signs in more languages.

The expert in the interview said the calf would’ve lost the scent it was carrying of the mother and the herd and got rejected for that reason.

The enviro-weenies at the park probably killed it to try and teach the tourists a lesson. Lefties don’t like people not following their rules. This was a way to stick it to them good. Enviro-weenies will be the first ones to kill a bunch of animals if it serves their ends. Their desire isn’t to protect nature, it’s to control humans.

Don’t forget the key goal of socialized medicine to euthanize anyone they see as a “burden” or too costly to the system.
