This just happened to me last night. I was in the middle of playing a game, and suddenly my computer restarted. I waited a minute, and then the Windows 10 upgrade had begun. I remember clicking the Red X on a Window 10 upgrade announcement, but it obviously didn’t stop it. The doggone thing took forever, and when it was finished I had a black screen even though my computer was still on. I had to go to my tablet in order to go online to figure out how to fix it. It’s working now, and I don’t know if I like 10 or not, but I do resent the way Microsoft snuck this upon me.

I wasn’t given that option.

I have SSD’s on our 3 home computer but have over a dozen on the mechanical drives used for backups & storage. I use a USB drive docking station and these drives are only powered on when I need to transfer or get something from it. Then, they are turned off and stored away.

SpinRite...I have a copy of SpinRite 6.0. It has saved me more than once. If you can get it to run on a failing drive, normally you can save it and prolong the life.

I listen to Steve Gibsons “Security Now” a lot and have learned how to keep our computers relatively safe. One of the best things I learned was to use a router as a hardware firewall. I bought the Linksys WTR54G as it has the SPI firewall security. I can disable my software firewall and go to Gibson’s Shields Up and after a port scan it shows I’m in stealth mode. I haven’t looked in a while, but I’ve seen the WTR54GL which, I think, is a newer model than the 54G, for under $50 on Newegg.

Another approach is to let Win10 install, then install Spybot Anti-beacon to rein in Microsoft’s excesses. Be careful with the optional settings, though.

Aha! So...there are Linux Mint “LiveCD” thingamajigs that can be put on a thumb drive. The PC needs to be set to boot from USB device in the BIOS. Easy peasy. Also, a USB optical drive is cheap.

I’ve read that it’s a control and marketing issue. Windows 10 is tied in with their ability to gather data and offer advertising so they want to compel everyone to use it.

That is exactly what they are doing. Their goal is to have control of over a billion devices worldwide and can gather data and target every one of them with online advertising.

I have experimented with Linux previously and preferred the applications available and the feel of Windows 7 and even XP. However, I am sure that I could adapt to the environment. The big problem that I have is that I use Photoshop, Sony Vegas, Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer and other programs that work well in Windows along with many peripherals that do not have good drivers outside of Windows.

I do not really care much about the look and feel of environment if I can still use the programs and peripherals that I depend on. All this talk about security and the need for constant updates is mostly hype.

Maybe we should be thanking Microsoft for making so many consider other options. This will create additional demand for more mainstream programs and peripherals that will work in Linux. This may convince Adobe and other software and peripheral manufacturers to begin adapting their programs for Linux. You can already run many using the “WINE” environment but there are some kinks that usually need to be worked out.

Microsoft is taking a gamble with this one. But I do not think that they care a great deal if they piss off serious computer users as long as they still get the business from the masses.

As a Windows 10 user, I think that this crap is offensive. Why does Microsoft want to force all of us onto Windows 10? What kind of conspiracy is afoot?

Switch your router off if you have to leave the machine on for some reason.

Actually, the update doesn’t install until you have clicked “Accept.”

Its just a preparation script that starts the process.

Good to know. Thanks. And It make sense since it only took a couple of minutes until everything was back to Windows 7.

9 years, you’re due. I’m real pleased with the Win 7 desktop that I picked up from OriginPC. They bench make your machine when you order it- it’s the crew who once founded Alienware so I hear. A game machine so it’s more powerful than anything I’ve ever owned before- I figured this way the hardware might keep current longer. Support is 24/7 and it’s stateside. You won’t be disappointed if you get one, you get all that you pay for.

MS Vista was better than Win 8.

Good point - I managed to keep XP until Win 7 was available and have had it for a while now.

Been considering LINUX but too lazy to bone up enough to be confident I wouldn't manage to break something I couldn't fix.

I use virtualbox, but you are right that it is considerably more effort. The linux bigots think that if a solution exists the problem is solved.

But many of the solutions require a lot more time, effort, and knowledge that the average person just doesn’t have. Also, some of the solutions provide the barest level of functionality.

I’m going to try it. The nagware is getting ridiculous & GW10 popping up umpteen times every day.
