freerepublic | June 17, 2017 | greeneyes

Posted on 06/17/2016 4:11:41 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Your former employer had some gorgeous climbing roses in their online catalog this past spring. I had to restrain the ‘buy now’ impulse by reminding myself if they were happy in WI they’d be VERY unhappy in my backyard.

Your greens sound delicious. We passed salad season about a month ago. I am thinking of growing some baby lettuces in a box of some sort on my countertop under the undercounter flourescents though. Haven’t gotten around to doing more than thinking of that right now though.

Don’t listen to that advice! Do what I do. Take a Bic lighter and light up every one of those mudder fecking nests that you can reach! When the caterpillars fall, stomp the chit outta them!

Fire is organic, too...and stomping on them is SO satisfying!

:)

AbolishCSEU :" ..Spinach bolting.."

Have you ever considered 'New Zealand spinach' ?
I understand it to be a vining spinach leaves, and continues to grow despite heat;
(disclaimer) I have never grown it myself, but several have done so on this board.

I stopped at the store, today. I needed mulch. It took all, and I mean ALL of my self-control to stay OUT of the Nursery Yard. Roses are now B 1 Get 2 FREE!

But, as I said, I gotta think on this a bit...

I also have a display garden area to fix up that’s going to be all evergreens and roses (I just LOVE that look!) and my future SIL is going to help me with the Shade Garden on the North side of the house. I’ve never had SHADE before; so I have many new perennials to discover. :)

Good to hear you sound so cheerful, and such great progress. We had some big trees that hubby cut and sawed into logs that I stood on end at strategic spots to sit on while I do garden stuff. The rest I have a 3 gallon bucket to use.

You have 10 times more garden than I do, so I can’t imagine all the effort for weeding. Fortunately, most of my stuff is planted so close together that I rarely have to do a lot of weeding-good thing, because when the weather is too hot, cold, or damp, I just stay inside. LOL

You always light up my life (!), and I appreciate your input.
Yes , revenge on the caterpillars can be quite satisfying, but the flu is more tactful and complete, even if you can't reach them all, given the height of the trees.
And the numbers will be reduced for next year.

One day. One day I’ll have time for non edible stuff. I want one of those shade gardens too. Some of them down here have gorgeous plants (I know not any of their names) and fern things. I’ve got some really great shady places that I’d love to do something with.

Thanks for the tip on Rosemary. I was thinking it might need shade. LOL

This will be my first year without a dog. I hope the bushy tailed rodents don’t get my maters.

Good to have all that land. We had twenty acres and plans to build, but then stuff happened and we couldn’t do it, so we just started planting stuff here. We have a couple of lots behind us that are empty, so somewhere down the line, we might be able to nab an acre or two to add to our current little one-acre mini farm.

Oh, yes. I know all about BT. I managed a Garden Center for a decade and have been gardening since I was knee high to my Country Granny.

I’m a few credits shy of being a Master Gardener...but knowing other MGs, I’m afraid of the somewhat self-absorbed JERK I could turn into if I take that final test, LOL!

I really miss my dogs, too! I lost my Lady Lab and then my Basset within the past few years. I’m really liking having a Beagle, though. He’s HALF a Basset Hound, anyway. ;)

I have grown it. It did really well as an indoor plant during the winter. Similar to spinach.

Shade gardens and any sort of Asian-Japanese looking gardens have always been my loves.

Let’s promise to make ‘some day’ sooner, rather than later!

LOL. I think TIK passed that test a long time ago IIRC, but is planning on a refresher class in Florida.

Well at least you have one. Lost my black lab many years ago, when she got loose and dashed in front of an oncoming car.

Daisy was part Jack Russell and Rat Terrier, and she was sort of calm in the house, but totally nuts after anything that moved or flew. So she kept the critters away from my gardens which are next to the patio and the play yard we had built for the grand kids.

Looks like your garden is doing well! That’s smart, too, using the more nitrogen-rich rainwater for watering.

Up here at over 9,000 feet on the Rockies, Yukon Gold potatoes did really well except for one thing: tuberworms. I found out that they’re brought by moths. They were terrible and bored through a lot of the potatoes. Hopefully, we’ll have better soil and weather before long. :-)

Most of my garden is FINALLY in. With the crazy weather and all that rain, I thought I’d never finish. As of today, everything except spaghetti squash and leeks are in. Wife is happy with her herb patch.

ZERO luck with spinach and lettuce - all washed out. Going to try and get some potted plants; let the seedlings go until next year. I’m collecting string beans and eggplant is flowering. And my pickle plants are starting to grow.
