This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Most of my garden is FINALLY in. With the crazy weather and all that rain, I thought I’d never finish. As of today, everything except spaghetti squash and leeks are in. Wife is happy with her herb patch.

ZERO luck with spinach and lettuce - all washed out. Going to try and get some potted plants; let the seedlings go until next year. I’m collecting string beans and eggplant is flowering. And my pickle plants are starting to grow.

Never heard of those worms before. This is the first year for Yukon gold, so I hope I get a bunch.

I have some green beans inter planted with butte potatoes too, and a few Dakota pearls that came up from last year’s patch.

Hubby has gobs of potatoes, but I don’t know what kind. I may have to can some make some hash browns for the freezer.
We will likely have more than we can store.

It’s good that you are having some luck with some things. I almost always have a few busts each year, but as long as I get some stuff, I’m happy.

I had a Rat Terrier in the late 80’s. ‘Chester The Molester.’ I think he weighed 10# soaking wet - but would take on all comers, LOL!

LOL. I know what you mean about taking all comers. Daisy was like that too.

I can report that we had delicious garlic scapes from the garden....garlic itself is looking good...I'm still pinching off blossoms from my smallish tomato plants...I want the plants to be tall and healthy before they start putting out tomatoes...

potatoes look good...if my 40 gallon potato barrel does any good, there will be pictures....

we had 100 degree weather here about 10 days ago...and now, its in the low 40's during the night with days in the 60's and 70's...now that's my kind of weather..

I can remember back in upstate NY when our neighborhood had a moth problem, my parents and our neighbors would wrap rags around a stick, soak them in gas, set them on fire then go around and burn the nests.....it was very solemn but also very fun for we kids to watch...

Got the irritation pump set up last week, and have put nearly 600 gallons on the garden & fruit trees. As luck would have it, after going through the first 400, we got just under 2” of rain in less than an hour. Between runoff instead of soaking in at that rate, plus a couple pf 100F days right after, it’s back to watering. So glad God was kind enough to create straw for mulching.

Due to poor emergence, I replanted a bunch of bush speckled butterbeans.

Still have to hill the potatoes, but at least I’ve tilled furrows between the rows, so just have to pull it over them. I was going to do it this evening, but spent that time dusting the damned potato beetle infestation; building some hills & planting cocozelle.

Egyptian onions are done for the year; getting too tough; and the garlic is about ready to dig.

Strawberries were a total bust; need to replant.

So far, we still have a peach on the tree. Might be a couple more, but I haven’t found them if there are.

Our strawberries were just planted this year. Some were from Walmart in bags and some in pots. The ones in pots are growing. The ones that came in a bag-similar to seed potatoes have none nothing. So we have spaces to fill in when we get runners.

We have peaches for the first time since planting in 2010. They are about the size of ping pong ball. Keeping fingers crossed that we get a crop. Peaches are so iffy in Mo. We had a great peach tree in a trailer park long ago. It only got fruit on average every 5 yrs. Early frost usually gets them.

Been eating 4 or 5 pie cherries every day - they are sour!
Didn’t have enough to make a pie, and anyway, I’m not allowed to have sugar and pie crust.

Major storm Thursday night - 70 mph winds with bow echo. Trees down, power lines down, still 62K without power after 40K restored today. ETA for all power to be back on is Sun 11 p.m. Spent this morning trouble shooting generator which is now on so we have water, lights & fridge. Freezer acting up so all the good stuff is now in fridge freezer - whew! The afternoon was spent with a chainsaw & hauling debris. Driveway & “yard” are back to normal but fields will take a lot of work before I can now. Grateful for what we do have & that all my family is ok. Almost forgot to mention the garden! I thought it would be destroyed - it looks great - no idea how that happened.

Based on the flowering habit , blooms, and the fact that it is an annual that readily self-sows, it appears to be 'phlox'.
I would need a close up of the leaf structure to be sure, though ..

The Lord smiled on your garden. That’s what happened. I have no doubt of it. Good thing you have that generator. I noticed ours had a lot of stuff in front of it in the garage the other day. I’m wondering if I can get hubby to start it and see if it’s working ok.

It is used so seldom, I’m afraid that it will not be operational when we need it.

Have you tried the Christmas lights trick? String Christmas lights on your fruit trees. If using the LED kind hang them a little more thickly than with the incandescent kind, but the heat they emit is usually just enough to keep frost off the flowers.

What size is your generator and is it hardwired into the house or do you use extension cords? I have a small 1,000 watt Honda just to run the fridge and freezer. I drained all the fuel so I hope it starts when I need it

Glad to hear that you are safe and sound, and surviving even though its via a generator.
Electricity is something that we too often take for granted; just make sure that you have enough gasoline and propane.
I had problems with my freezer after just a minute or two of brown-out, and couldn't get to it in time. You might need a repairman.
Hang in there !
