Such lovely music. Almost wish I’d been born sooner.
Almost. :)

It is my belief that the seed for Ray Stevens' Guitarzan
came from Popsicles, Icicles.  Specifically, the lyrics  ---

He loves bright stars and guitars and ...

Thanks! Before my time, but this tune gets lots of airtime on the oldies stations I’ve listened to.

Produced by Kim Fowley (1939-2015) who was one weird dude.

His photo on Google looks a lot like David Bowie.

If David Bowie’s corpse had been dug up and re-animated.

Written by David Gates who later went on to form the group, “Bread” and wrote & sang most of their hits.

A disc jockey on a local station claimed that “Popsicles and Icicles” first “broke out” in Indio, Calif., where it became a local hit in the summer of 1963.

If so, I’ll bet it was on the juke box at the Jumbo Burger, one of the most popular eateries in town.

This song, which came out about the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis, has a similar sound.

Stop the Music--The Glitters (1962)

That is a pale copy of the Shirelles version.

I actually prefer the Glitters’ version—one of the few cover versions that I like better than the original.

Here's a song that should be a big hit on FR:

This is a good example of one the wholesome genres of music which were murdered by the Beatles and those in media who boosted the Beatles.

I was 16. He was 17. It was our song. I wore his letter sweater, his senior ring on a chain around my neck, and the record thin. I can still sing every note, probably even in my sleep.

Now it's decades later. He and his wife live down the street. I'm so glad she's married to him and not me! Just whew!

Thanks for posting the song. It was an unexpected nostalgic journey to break up the routine afternoon. Doo-wop forever!

LOL! Well that post didn’t end the way I thought it was going to!

Here’s another song from the summer of 1963 that was sung by four Marines:

Easier Said Than Done by the Essex:

Life seemed so much simpler before Nov. 22, 1963.
