AC/DC’s Cliff Williams to Retire After Current Tour
Guitar World ^ | 07/08/2016 | Christopher Scapelliti

Cliff Williams has played bass in AC/DC since 1977. By the time the group’s current tour wraps up in September, he’ll have logged nearly 40 years with the Australian rockers.

Apparently 40 years is long enough. Williams says his future plans don’t include continuing with AC/DC.

“It’s been what I’ve known for the past 40 years,” Williams says. “But after this tour, I’m backing off of touring and recording.” […]

“Losing Malcolm, the thing with Phil and now with Brian, it’s a changed animal,” Williams says of the band. As for his decision, “I feel in my gut it’s the right thing.” …

Well, since there’s probably about 10,000 bands out there that can play ACDC music better than ACDC can, it’s probably a good idea.

Retired? I never knew he went to work in the first place.
What was he, an electrical contractor or something?

Well, I’m thunderstruck. Here I’d just gotten back in black and now I’m shot down in flames. Now you young guys, for those about to rock, it’s a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll, and when you get there all that’s waiting is a whole lot of Rosie. Hell’s bells!

And yet not one of them have had 1/1,000,000th of the success and popularity of AC/DC.

Good interview at the link.

Guy is big souled and not bitter at all. He is just stepping away.

Cool hair for a guy his age.

Gives props to the rhythm guitarist who is filling in for Malcolm. I want to say he is Malcolm’s nephew.

Gives props to Chris Slade who is filling in for Chris Rudd who is embroiled in that crazy lawsuit.

Gives props to Axl Rose who has been filling in for Brian Johnson. I was talking just the other day to a guy who had seen AC/DC recently with Axl. There is an upside to not having Johnson up front. Apparently Johnson refuses to sing any of Bon Scott’s songs except for the smash hits that absolutely must be played. Axl is singing everything from the Bon Scott era including the obscure “deep cuts” from the early albums.

That is true, but there does come a time when a band just kinda needs to enjoy the success they’ve had and hang it up. That time for AC/DC came a long time ago.

That’s because Angus Young is still full of spunk. Only once Angus calls it quits will AC/DC be done.

Had the extreme pleasure of seeing them in February at the Pepsi Center/Denver. Looks like that will be the last one of many.

Wasn't expecting much, I was wrong. They were never better.

Stevie Young is the son of the late Steve Crawford Young, who was Malcolm and Angus’ eldest brother.

Stevie filled in for Malcolm back in 1988 as well, when Malcolm couldn’t tour due to being treated for alcohol addiction. He looked a lot like his uncle back then; some people weren’t aware that Malcolm wasn’t touring that year thanks to that, apparently.

Didn’t hear about Brian refusing to sing Bon-era songs of late. Most of the post-Bon-era songs after 1988 were credited to Young and Young, so that means that Brian spent only eight years writing lyrics out of his thirty-six years in the band; not a good idea to start being particular about what the band should play after all that time, and I’m not sure that he had that much input into set lists compared to the Young brothers.

And that's the difference between being the creator... the innovator, versus a copy-cat.

Yes, you would think the Young brothers would have the final say. On the other hand, Johnson has ultimate control of his vocal cords and was instrumental to their 1980 tour de force album. I guess it’s a negotiation. Anyway, apparently they’re playing songs with Axl that they didn’t play with Johnson.

Well, he's worth about $100,000,000. And ... you were saying?
