New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

I have mint tea, and though I don’t like mint, I do drink it for my stomach. In fact I have a lot of teas for different things. I even have some jasmine tea, of all things. It’s a rather different flavor, fairly mild.

One thing I don’t like is green tea. I just don’t like the taste of it. I thought I had a box of mint tea, but I only have one bag left. Time to go shopping... :o|

Snow is predicted up north for higher elevations. I’m going to pray that if there are storms during the times I’ll be traveling, we can fly between them!

Maybe tomorrow, when I get the clothes hung up, I’ll go to Wally’s to get some tea, a couple of yogurts and a couple of rice puddings.

DP can have all the colorful spiders he wants. I don’t like anything with more than four legs.

Did he take pictures of any? They would be interesting to see, at any rate.

I don’t know about pictures, but he probably did.

Back from church, 2nd load of camp wash is on.

Then I take it the campers are not quite so stinky, now, eh?

I just finished a letter to my grandson, and thought about going in to lie down, since my night was disrupted, somewhat.

The bottom is still dropping out of the barometer, and I’m somewhat depressed, so bed is probably the best place for me. If I thought I could do it and get away with it, I would take a 30 minute nap. I’m afraid if I try it, I will sleep far longer and that’s not a good idea, since tomorrow is wash day.

Sometimes, I really wish I had the stamina to wash more than one day a week, but it’s not going to happen until I have my own washer. (I can dream, can’t I?)

I lay down for a few minutes for a Jake Affection Emergency, but then Jake smelled meat and ran off, leaving me no excuse for staying in bed.

The campers are all washed, and I’ve cleaned some of their ears, too. Kathleen knocked over the cat food dish in the sunroom; I need to go sweep there.

I wrote to James, but had to print it three times, because the first two times, I found typsos, and thought I caught them the first time. HAH!

Yep, time for me to head for someplace where mistakes don’t count and I can laugh at myself. And have another breathing treatment.

See you in the morning.

I just downloaded the iso image. That’s not a file that you copy to your DVD or Thumb Drive, but one you install as a bootable image. Unfortunately, it’s too big for a CD-ROM. It will have to be burned to a DVD-ROM.

You can download it from here: https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop. The next page will ask you to donate but you can use the link below that says to go straight to the download an not make a donation.

On the Ubuntu Web Site they say you need:
2 GHz dual core processor or better
2 GB system memory
25 GB of free hard drive space
Either a DVD drive or a USB port for the installer media
Internet access is helpful

If you don’t have any burnable DVD-ROMs you can use a 2GB Thumb Drive. I think those cost less than $5. There are all sorts of sites that show you how to transfer this image to either the thumb drive or DVD-ROM and boot your computer from it.

After you boot it will ask you if you want to install or try Ubuntu. Select “try” and it will boot your machine and give you access to all your hardware as if yo had booted to a hard drive. The only thing it won’t let you do is change any system settings or install new software. But it’s perfectly safe - you can run the programs and everything without changing your hard drive.

I actually have my laptop set up to dual-boot because I have to use Ubuntu to scan anything with my scanner. It was easy to install and is very easy to use.

And, as cute as those two were, this one nearly had me laughing out loud when I was supposed to be paying attention to something else.

"Whoever is at the bottom of the heap won, I guess."

That is oddly comforting, considering that I spend a lot of time at the bottom of the heap.

Here's a little fall foliage shot..

Looking North up the West field with the usual advanced grass substitute in the foreground. It (the field) is narrower than the East field. And closer. .. ;-)

I’m up, ready to sort clothes and head for the laundry room.

When I get back, I’ll need a steroid treatment, because the wind is blowing 15 mph sustained. No more steroids after this. I wonder why that stuff is so doggone expensive. I could have had it by now if it cost the same as the others.

Sleep was fairly good, and I was glad of it. The typsos I made yesterday were indicative of gray lint. It’s gonna be an interesting ride until the lint disappears from my head.

The kittehs look as if their job is to guard the steps so no two-legged creature can venture up them!

Thanks Argee, for the destructions. I’ll see if I have a DVD-ROM with the space needed. I’ll cut and paste the info so I can keep it.

Have you tried one of those spray-air cans for your head?

Morning. Folks are screaming here, I’m not sure why.
