Thank you ‘Face.
Your Greetings have been duly passed on.
The road back across the hills was amazingly quiet. Not another car on the road.
It was ten days in October that got lopped off of 1582..
England switched in the mid-18th century and were still dealing with old-calendar/new-calendar issues two generations later.
I saw a few names I recognized & give a “second” to votes for Ravi Zacharias and John Piper. Zacharias debates formally, so there’s a strength to the structure of his teaching that sometimes is only vaguely present in the preaching of those who don’t regularly face tough theological opposition, or audiences in great need of exacting explanation.
John Piper has blessed me greatly with his work “Desiring God,” which you should read or listen to end-to-end ( http://www.desiringgod.org/books/desiring-god ). I don’t go as far as he does concerning the implications of the Sovereignty of God, but his exaltation of Christ is wholehearted and lavish.
As with everything, there is the mixed admonition to BOTH keep your Baloney Detector engaged as you receive information, AND not pounce to quickly when it goes off. There is a worthy dose of caution to accepting the word of anyone without examination, and hubris in the assumption that one’s own Baloney Detector is perfectly tuned. There is but One Standard.
Excellent points, thanks. I enjoy a good religious lecture, so I’m looking forward to some from various sources, but I expect I’ll disagree with this or that in the course of things.
Noting that my disagreeing doesn’t mean the person is wrong!
Merry Christmas, ‘Face and all the Undead!
I spent the day at the emergency vet clinic with my dog. Made lots of new friends!
Dog is okay, just puking out one end and squirting out the other. No fun for him or for us!
Thank you! Isn’t he the one who did all those terrific building projects in the desert? Lots of water features....
He built the port of Caesarea. He built the fortresses of Masada, and Herodium. And of course he built/refurbished the Temple in Jerusalem.
A good overview is actually found on Wikipedia HERE.
Thank you for the link. It was fun to read, and it also demonstrates a couple of areas of confusion for me (which sons he killed vs. which ones became tetrarchs). Since it raised a whole bunch more questions, gotta look up more stuff. What’s really interesting is how he got the water there!
Uh oh. Is T-c OK? The kitty is usually up by now.
Its morning in the midst of Ar-KAN-sas and I’m the only one up of course. We got to Skype with James, yesterday, and almost the first thing he said was, “Hey,Gramma!”. That was pretty cool! Then, to someone in the background, “My Gramma’s there!”
Today I think we’re going to go into Little Rock and ride a tour trolley, but I don’t know why.
We stayed up late watching a Shakespeare movie.
Floofy squee!
I wish it would get light out. And, oh, yes: I get to sleep in my own bed tomorrow night! YAY!
It was almost midnight when we went to bed. The BBC has put out new versions of “Henry VI, part 1 and 2” and “Richard III.” I finished two Jesus refrigerator magnets!
In Henry VI Part 1, the guy who was Lord Robert in “Downton Abbey” played Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester. Benedict Cumberbatch, Elen’s favorite, is Richard III.
We’re going to the mall in a little while so the byos and Kathleen can buy Lego. Elen and Sally will be going on an overnight dog-sitting job for some neighbors of the church friends they’ve been hanging out with. The neighbors are going to Raleigh overnight and don’t want their elderly dogs to be lonely.
Tom’s raven just landed in the poplar tree outside. “I see a huge bird!” Kathleen yelled. He’s so big he looks like he’ll break the branch.
Were the BBC programs on DVD? It sounds good to watch. I like British shows, movies etc., mostly because of the detail of the Period costumes.
Streaming from PBS.org, I think. However, I’m sure the Acorn catalog will eventually have the whole set on DVD. The series is called “The Hollow Crown.”
I’ll try to remember the title, since can’t get streaming anything...
Speaking of the British, I see George Michael died last night, supposedly of heart failure.
