I always wondered what was going through Neil Peart’s mind when he wrote “The Trees”. Always thought it was about environmental tension between America “The Oaks” and Canada “The Maples” obviously.
The Cult of Personality
Red Barchetta by Rush
I strip away the old debris
That hides a shining car
A brilliant Red Barchetta
From a better vanished time
We’ll fire up the willing engine
Responding with a roar
Tires spitting gravel
I commit my weekly crime
This tune is about a kid who sneaks out of his utopian society to drive an old sports car that his uncle has preserved for him that is now illegal to drive. Neal Peart saw the Climate Change Nazis coming 30+ years ago.
Everybody Wants to Rule the World
Genesis - The Knife
“Some of you are going to die/Martyrs of course/To the freedom/That I will provide”
Volunteers Jefferson Airplane
I love Jorma’s finger bending wah wah but anyone my age who lived that era knows serious Yippies cherish that song
I think Balin and Kantner wrote it
And of course David Crosbys Long Time Gone
Both gave me chill bumps in my wasted revolutionary youth
That was my first thought, Red Barchetta.
When it came out, it was unthinkable.
Now it is very possible.
Maybe it can be changed to Red SUV.
The Soviet national anthem.
Darth Vader’s theme.
Barney’s song: I love you, you love me....
Bad to the Bone
Highway to Hell
Flaming moonbat that he is, but Henry Rollins’ “Liar” is perfect.
I think it was meant as an object lesson to the downsides of demanding utter equality.
The Internationale
Billy Bragg
Stand up all victims of oppression
For the tyrants fear your might
Don’t cling so hard to your possessions
For you have nothing if you have no rights
Let racist ignorance be ended
For respect makes the empires fall
Freedom is merely privilege extended
Unless enjoyed by one and all
So come brothers and sisters
For the struggle carries on
The internationale
Unites the world in song
So comrades come rally
For this is the time and place
The international ideal
Unites the human race
Let no one build walls to divide us
Walls of hatred nor walls of stone
Come greet the dawn and stand beside us
We’ll live together or we’ll die alone
In our world poisoned by exploitation
Those who have taken now they must give
And end the vanity of nations
We’ve but one earth on which to live
And so begins the final drama
In the streets and in the fields
We stand unbowed before their armor
We defy their guns and shields
When we fight provoked by their aggression
Let us be inspired by like and love
For though they offer us concessions
Change will not come from above
The Temptations - Ball of Confusion
“Politicians say ‘More Taxes...will solve everything’.......and the band played on....”
Death On Two Legs
Queen
Silent Running - Mike and the Mechanics
Swear allegiance to the flag, whatever flag they offer
Never hint at what you really feel
Teach the children quietly, for someday sons and daughters
Will rise up and fight while we stood still
Yep. Lots of Pearts lyrics are starting to be a little too real now. (I am one of the nerds that listen to the lyrics I guess ;)
Queen - Fat-bottomed Girls
Ah, that makes sense, thanks. I know he had an affinity for Ayn Rand’s philosophy.
