THROOP, N.Y. (AP) -- How hot is it in upstate New York? So hot that horse manure is bursting into flames.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation says it received multiple complaints July 5 about the smell and smoke emanating from a burning pile of horse manure at a property in the town of Throop, in the Finger Lakes region 20 miles west of Syracuse.

It’s not about the ambient temperature - it’s about the internally generated heat from decomposition. In PHX, the humidity is generally low so manure quickly dries, losing some of the elements necessary. It’s also a matter of critical mass where manure is piled while fresh, creating a biomass that becomes a self-generating heat source.
Not necessarily. Manure piles ignite because of heat generated by decomposition causing straw or other bedding to reach its ignition temperature. From firsthand experience a damp, even wet pile with a lot of manure relative to the amount of dry material is most likely to catch fire. A day or two of rain can set up the right conditions. You probably don't see that kind of situation in Arizona.
I went to Hobart for four years and never even heard of Throop, which is probably about 25 miles from Geneva. Are they sure the smell isn’t the burning of the Israeli flags at the convention?

Manure piles generate their own heat. The vast majority of urbanites don’t know such things about country living.

You guys, of course, are correct. I keep forgetting how much wetter and humid almost everywhere is compared to Phoenix. Those types of environments just propagate gas-producing bacteria like crazy.
I am perplexed. If it were NYC, that would make sense since DeBlasio is so full of sh**. But upstate? Not so much.
