Why 'Mulholland Drive' is the greatest film since 2000
BBC ^ | 23 August 2016 | Luke Buckmaster

Cinema in the early years of the 21st Century has experienced something of an existential crisis. Terms such as ‘TV-like’ or ‘television-esque’ were once intended as insults; now, in a period most commentators consider a new ‘golden age of television’ – a Don Draper here, a Walter White there – that is no longer the case. So, if television has evolved to a point where it is no longer considered an inferior art form, what does this mean for cinema?

Perhaps it is no coincidence that David Lynch’s mind-bending mystery-drama Mullholland Drive has been named by BBC Culture’s critics’ poll as the best film of the century so far. Its very roots lie in television: the film began as a failed TV pilot and was salvaged into feature-length format.

I much preferred Life of Pi or Wall E or even Up.

But really this a ridiculous set of culture nonsense from the BBC as if 16 years of really not very good film making somehow deserves a top 100 list. It is ridiculous particularly since greater films have been made in the past and in the future

I looked it up and learned that it’s David Gilmour. Is that right? That’s cool. I’m a Floyd fan - again for the music and not the politics. Wish You Were Here is a great album.

David Gilmour is a supposed atheist...what’s he doing being a godfather?

You don't have to have morals to be a Godfather my friend.

I would suspect that one would have to believe in God/god?

I read “The Stranger” some thirty years ago, what a steaming pile. Did not bother with anything else by Camus.

People have an innate need to believe in something greater than themselves. If they do not fulfill that need with an edifying religion, they will fill it with something destructive; i.e. Islam, secular humanism, hedonism, drugs, etc.

Not necessarily. Depending on where you are Godparents are also your designated replacements if the parents die.

“Existential” doesn’t mean “real.”

A secular godfather? Novel, indeed.

Close enough, having to do with existence.

Synonyms - empirical, factual, observational and experiential.

Laura Elena Harring isn’t listed in the credits for Mulholland Drive...

The Stranger is a thought experiment. It’s a very good illustration of what that mode of thinking leads to.

She played Rita. You could hardly miss her. She was the naked woman Noami Watts was laying on top of.

I’m sorry. I was confusing it with “Mulholland Falls”, which I actually saw about 20 yeas ago.

I guess Mulholland Drive was better than Zyzzyx Road, but consider: a film maker could brilliantly work out a complex story like Memento and critics are only mildly impressed. Another film maker leaves all the loose ends untied and everything in a state of confusion, like Lynch with Mulholland Drive and critics will proclaim him brilliant for creating a film that defies sense.

Mulholland Drive and Mulholland Falls are very different movies!

I wouldn't even say that David Lynch is an acquired taste. I don't know how one would learn to like his films. Most people despise his movies, which is why critics love them.
