Kindle Paperwhites turn Windows 10 PCs into paperweights: Plugging one in 'triggers a BSOD'

Plugging a Kindle Paperwhite into a PC running Windows 10 with the Anniversary Update installed sparks a full system meltdown, it is claimed.

Connecting the Amazon e-reader to a fully up-to-date W10 machine via USB triggers an immediate Blue Screen of Death, according to complaints on Microsoft's support forum. All the trouble started when people downloaded and installed the Anniversary Update, which arrived at the turn of the month. That's the same upgrade that has knackered millions of webcams and caused some systems to freeze up.

The crash kicks off in the storage partition driver partmgr.sys, with a bugcheck code 0x7E (SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED) and cause code 0xC0000005 (STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION) – in other words, a kernel-level thread in the driver touched memory it shouldn't have, and blew away the environment. It sounds like Windows is trying to mount the filesystem on the Kindle as a removable storage device and getting completely confused.

Some people say the BSOD only happens when they plug their Kindle into a USB 3.0 port, others say inserting it into a USB 2 interface triggers the crash too. Some people always get a crash, some most of the time, and others have reported experiencing no problems at all.

Windows 10 Anniversary Update Woes... PING!

You can find all the Windows Ping list threads with FR search: just search on keyword "windowspinglist".

And you thought it couldn't get any worse??

Un-freakin'-believable.

Webcams, PowerShell, now BSODs trying to talk to a Kindle. This feels like amateur hour on a brand-new development effort, not update releases from a company with a 30-year-old product.

Is this Anniversary update something that comes thru automatic updates? Do I need to turn off auto-update?

Well for those interested in some helpful info, and not just here to pimp Linux Mint or tell us about their PC running XP, the guys at NeoWin seemed to have narrowed it down a little.

http://www.neowin.net/news/windows-10-anniversary-update-crashes-when-a-kindle-is-plugged-in#comments

“For whatever it’s worth, we’ve actually recreated this problem with our own Kindles. In our testing using USB 3.0 ports seems to be the issue, with USB 2.0 ports seemingly not being affected. We can also confirm that rebooting the PC with the Kindle still plugged in allows users to then access their Amazon devices.”

So sticking to Win7 on this machine may turn out to have been the smart move after all. Of course, probably like many Win7 folks I have a Touch instead of the newer Paperwhite, and an old Fire. And I email PDFs to my Kindle account instead of sideloading.

Not much better than using nvidia video cards with the latest
Windows 10 update. My video card failed after the last update.
Disabled the driver. Back up and running but with basic video.

This is a feature, not a bug.

People will live. Just like when it happens on other OSs.
These things are relatively minor, but because it’s MS, all the usual drama queens have their meltdowns because the name of the game is to scream and yell whenever something like this happens with Windows.

MS has already said that ta fix for PowerShell is coming in 5 days. Since the few people that use it in professional environments dont just apply updates in the first day (at least you shouldn’t), they aren’t going to be affected.

The Amazon device and webcams will likely require some driver upgrade from the respective companies.

My decision to click out of the free upgrade offer 3,147 times is looking better all the time.

It will be kinda hard to create “artifical intelligence” when humans can’t even get an operating system right.

It does come in automatically. Afterwards, your system version will read 1607. I checked mine and I’m still in the fifteen hundreds, so apparently the Anniversary update is not installed yet. But when I go to check on available updates, it says there are none and that my computer is up to date. I used Kindle Paperwhite extensively, so this could be a real hassle, if what the article says is true.

All these hassles of an electronic text reader, shaped the same dimensions as a simple paperback book and with many times the cost!!! Jeepers, mr. Wilson!

I guess I’ll just stay with my paperbacks (who would steal a real paperback book when they could steal your kindle?), and gladly add it back among the 300 others i have on my ‘read’ shelf, not counting the numerous ‘to be read’ books.

Maybe some day they’ll figure out a USB connection for a paperback book, and sell it to the millenials.

(Remember Dilbert, the etch-a-sketch reboot, and his boss?)

One workaround is to plug the Kindle into the machine ... while the computer is sleeping.

I don’t know. My first wife hated that.

I keep waiting for some distant relative to buy me a Kindle as an XMas present.

So I will ask the question now—is it ok to burn them in the wood stove? ;-)

I never got an anniversary update. Maybe that’s a good thing.

dear cgbg,

With all my knowledge, burning electronic devices inside the house is not good for your lungs, or your nose, at all. There is the propensity to enjoin the happy hunting grounds at an age too early.

LOL!

I can only imagine a Linux person knocking Windows for this when that same Amazon device wont even work with a Linux machine.
