Twenty million dollars worth of cheese.

That's how much of the good stuff the federal government plans to buy to ease America's massive cheese surplus.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced this week it will purchase the nearly 11 million pounds of cheese for "private inventories."

Before you get too excited about government-funded grilled cheese sandwiches, that means the cheese will go to food banks and charity groups around the country.

I remember that our small country grade school (1st to 8th) in Indiana had government surplus cheese, powdered eggs, butter and other items that were used to make our daily lunches. I saw it in the store room when I was helping out in the 5th or 6th grade move some big cans of food from the store room to the kitchen area. It was raining outside and a classmate’s mother was one of the two cooks.

We’ll be lucky to get watery gruel.

I remember a similar program in the 1960s or 1970s. My mother got some free. Terrible tasting stuff.

Um, no. That’s how much the govt spent, of TAXPAYER $$, on an extra Constitutional\illegal purchase.

...and the (R) in the halls of Congress cheered for how ‘gracious’ they were to the POOR poor and downtrodden.

Grape boycotts of the 70’s. Gov’t bought the surplus and sent it to our boys in Viet Nam. Most of it was waste. Guys couldn’t eat only a fraction of it.

Dairy states like Vermont should pay the price. Wisconsin? Mich? Get rid of Iowa ethanol subsidies first.
