Astronomy Picture of the Day

Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer.

Explanation: Globular clusters once ruled the Milky Way. Back in the old days, back when our Galaxy first formed, perhaps thousands of globular clusters roamed our Galaxy. Today, there are less than 200 left. Over the eons, many globular clusters were destroyed by repeated fateful encounters with each other or the Galactic center. Surviving relics are older than any Earth fossil, older than any other structures in our Galaxy, and limit the universe itself in raw age. There are few, if any, young globular clusters in our Milky Way Galaxy because conditions are not ripe for more to form. The featured video shows what it might look like to go from the Earth to the globular cluster Terzan 5, ending with a picture of the cluster taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. This star cluster was recently found to contain not only stars formed in the early days of our Milky Way Galaxy, but also, quite surprisingly, others that formed in a separate burst of star formation about 7 billion years later.

Makes me feel so small and insignificant.

You should feel quite the opposite, knowing that the God who made these heavenly wonders, died and rose again so that you could live.

Makes me feel so small and insignificant.

I don't know why. As far as we know, with all these incredible wonders and complex goings-on we've discovered and observed in the Universe, WE are by far the most complex and amazing.

So far.

Most likely, any other life we encounter will be equally complex and amazing, intelligent or not, but there is the possibility that we’ll encounter more advanced beings or phenomena as well, whose existence will be astounding.

Go to a site like the following where you can turn a YouTube video into a .GIF animation. However, to make them longer than 10 seconds, you'd have to register with the site. ie, create a (free) account. They just ask for your e-mail address. You will receive an account confirmation reply e-mail from them within seconds. Long animations like this one (50 secs) take awhile to process. I'm currently working on this one. Still processing after about 5 minutes.

You’re welcome.

Again, you can create a 10 sec (max) animation from a youtube video without registering. However, reg is very simple. You only need to provide your e-mail address, create a password and user name. Then reply to the e-mail confirmation they will quickly send you.

Took about 10 mins or so to create the animation from the 50 sec APOD video at YouTube. I had to of course go to YT in order to get the YT link/url.

I like Chesterton’s quote:

“The cosmos is about the smallest hole that a man can hide his head in.”

I just realized, the .gif animation I made, for whatever reason, didn’t properly copy the APOD video. I thought something didn’t look right, as it never actually zoomed-in on a star cluster. I hadn’t watched the entire APOD vid until just now. Have no idea what went wrong. It was the first time I ever used the site. I just came across it about an hour ago.

You can't just snag a favorite picture from a desktop folder...it has to be hosted someplace on line to be posted here.

Best bet is to save the image to an image hosting service, I use Photobucket. In Firefox right click and select "Copy image location", in Safari right click and select "Open image in new tab" and copy the address in the address bar. Other browsers have similar tricks.

Cynwoody adds this tip:

You can pre-cue a YouTube video by adding a t parameter to the link. Like so:

<a href=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f66kEastC58&t=35s>Bill Ayers on Obama

<a href=http://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=CwrgsufbFH4&t=3m13s>Bill Ayers on Obama

Way cool! Thanks Cynwoody!

I think I see what went wrong. The max length appears to be 20 secs, even after registering. 10 secs max without registering.

I’m going to move up the starting point for a followup to 30 secs into the APOD vid. This way it should capture the actual star cluster zoom in.

Processing it now...
