It’s quite common for dogs to be comfortable around the bears during this period (waiting for ice to form so the bears can reach their hunting grounds)- the dogs sense the bears aren’t there to hurt them- The bears are usually in a playful mood during this period-
Dogs are sacrificial lambs up north to help keep bears from attacking people.
I dunno, Bob. I watched the link you sent and thought I was wrong, for a minute. It was cute until the last one where the dog is frantic to get away. That dog CLEARLY was not happy with that bear all over him and as the video cut out, he was trying to run away. The bear caught his backside and was dragging him back. If not a terrified dog, at least an uncomfortable one. I have a feeling if those dogs weren’t chained they would run far and fast from the bears. As chained submissives, they do what they have to do to survive — keep it light, keep it friendly, don’t get eaten. They aren’t “playing” with the bears as dogs do with each other. They aren’t jumping on the bears, crouching and pouncing. They are tolerating and being pawed at by the bears. Feel sorry for the dogs. They’re scared.

I’ve seen other videos of dogs off leash playing with hte bears during these periods- this was on nat geo or discovery channel- i dunno if youtuibe has it or not- maybe- but I;ll look and see

Haha. Cute play between a grizzly cub and dog — but alas not an adult polar bear. Nothing scary there!
Interested to see an untethered sled dog willingly playing with a wild polar bear. I just don’t believe it. Sled dogs are smartly surviving the encounters, not enjoying themselves. But please do forward a link if you come across an untethered dog playing with an adult polar bear. I’d love to be wrong on this; otherwise, looks like human cruelty to me.
