Ottawa Wins!
As disappointed as I am for the Stamps, it is GOOD to see the cup back in Ottawa! The last time Ottawa woman, I was not even old enough to drive!
Too bad they were not the Rough Riders instead of the REDBLACKS.
The Rough Riders ceased operations in 1996, 20 years ago.
Here is the RR helmet, followed by the REDBLACKS helmet:
Payback for the 69th Grey Cup? Especially Tony Gabriel being wrongly called for pass interference late in the 4th quarter as Gary Hayes hung on his back!
As this game neared an end, I feared that I would be transported back to the 1981 Grey Cup where the Rough Riders were 22.5 point underdogs. They had a 6-11 record vs Edmonton’s 14-1-1. At halftime, Ottawa led 20-1. That dufus call led to Dave Cutler winning it for Edmonchuck in the last seconds. Thirty five years later, the miracle came true, with many who were not even born when Ottawa last appeared in a Grey Cup!
When they had their naming contest I submitted “Ruffians” because of the closeness to the original name: “Rough,” three syllables, and close enough to Rough Riders yet different enough that the Saskatcheweenies could do nothing but pound sand.
We know how well that worked out...
Congratulations Ruffians!
Cheers
Jim
